It was socially unacceptable long before that. I was sent to the office in the 5th grade (1981) for calling a friend "********". I only remember it because it was the only paddling I ever got in school. Beck then the accepted term was "special".
But, honestly, this thread isn't about any of that. It's about stupid people with no clinical diagnosis. The elderly and mentally ill or handicapped people or special needs people who fall victim to scams are just that.... victims.
My best friend's kid was born with downs syndrome. She is one of my top 15 favorite humans on Earth. If she loves you, you're alright by me. If she doesn't like you, I have no use for you. She can spot a bad human from 100 yards away. Best hugs you'll ever get.
Stupid people, however, get what's coming to 'em.

I have gotten about half a dozen of these calls in the past week. I always wonder how many people are dumb enouhg to fall for it.

This has sadly been my experience. I have known a number of people who slid down the hole of dementia and it's not a pretty sight.
As for the PC police comments in this thread, I think that too often these days having a modicum of discretion, class, or decorum gets easily conflated with "being PC" and is more easily dismissed by use of this mechanism. Regarding the idea of a thread devoted to the idea of making fun of people who are less acute than we are, I am reminded of a beautiful quote from Will Durant:
"To speak ill of others is a dishonest way of praising ourselves; let us be above such transparent egotism. If you can't say good and encouraging things, say nothing. Nothing is often a good thing to do, and always a clever thing to say."
The above is posted not in an attempt to shut down the thread, but as a reminder that compassion for those impressionable people who fall victim to malevolent people and scams is not a weakness; I would argue the opposite, in fact.
I'm not sure what to think of this. Flat earth does seem to be gaining a lot of believers but I suspect most of them are doing it in a ironic sense or to take the piss. However, some folks seem to be dead serious about it, which I guess is Poe's law in action.

I was argue that these Millennials don't ACTUALLY believe the Earth is flat.
They do, however, believe that being surveyed is a useless exercise. They feel as if it turns them into some sort of lab rat. They don't want anyone trying to "get in their heads to see what makes them tick". (Which is ironic in and of itself being that may of them pot their most personal thoughts and feelings for all the world to read.)
It's their way of telling the survey to stuff it. Some of them may be spoiled. Some of them may be ignorant (because they were taught a bunch of useless garbage in school). But they aren't stupid.
Now, crazy OLD people thinking the Earth is flat? Yeah that I believe.
