If a tree falls in the forrest do pickups actually make a difference

Did you even read my posts? Or are you just trying to argue? The up charge people put on ebony is no where close to actual price difference between ebony and maple/rosewood. But they put a huge price tag on it and people think it sounds better. Your damn right that builder just loves it, because he just sold a bass for hundreds of dollars more, with out doing any extra work, and minimal extra material cost.
I clearly read your post. My point was that it is not about "better," but "different." I agreed with much of your post, but took exception to the notion that the issue was about something being "better." Also I was pointing out that price has nothing to do with cost, but with what people are willing to pay.
(Still, if there is minimal extra material cost, and no greater labor cost, then the only way that every builder could gets hundreds of dollars extra without any more cost or difficulty on their part is if they are all in collusion. Obviously if a builder can do it for virtually the same price, he can easily undercut all those builders who are raking in that easy money.)

I also never said anything about the builder loving anything, so I'm not sure how I'm "damn right" about that, but thank you. :)

I wouldn't call it collusion, I would call it people being ignorant to the cost of materials. Not everyone charges a ridiculous up charge for ebony. Carvin, for example, I believe has no up charge at all for it.
