It would have to be a Fender Jazz and Precision. I figure those 2 would cover any sonic needs I might have, considering the type of music I lke to play.
Currently an '08 MIA Jazz and a 2010 Squier VM P.

Between those two I can easily cover pretty much anything. Add in a set of JJ pickups for the Sadowsky and it would be an extremely versatile recording bass.

I presently own 3 basses but only plan to keep these two.

1) MTD Grendel 4(maple neck). Joe Barden Pickups, DR LoRider stainless
2) Gretsch Electromatic, GHS Precision Flatwounds

These 2 basses pretty well cover everything that I want. They are quite different and both have a large variety of tones.

My Sadowsky J/J and....

Just sold my Fender '62 AVRI because I chose a Don Grosh Bass...

Not on the list and typically over looked because Don builds guitars mainly. He occasionally has a run of basses that sell out immediately once the shops get them in.

My P-bass and J-bass. I'm still not getting the reason why you'd need/want anything else!? Well maybe a Music Man Stingray would be nice, I've had a few of those.

I've got a P and a J and I can give you lots of reasons I reach for my G&L 2500 or my Lakland 55-02 over them. The main reason, they sound better to me. Of course, that's just one man's opinion.

Obviously it's a personal choice but IMO some of the instruments out there seem to be all show and no go! It depends on the sound you're looking for. Many players are bass guitarists and would want more versatility but as a bassist, other than the extended low end that a 5 string offers, lots of cash for a pretty axe!!! Your G&L to me is an upgrade of the Fender's since Leo had his hands in both the original Music Man and G&L which is great!

I'd like a second bass simply as a backup to what would be my main bass.

I'm thinking a nice P with a Fender '62 pup. Black with a red tort guard, rosewood board.

For the backup, be happy with exactly the same thing, or, maybe for a little variation, have it finished in a vintage creamy white instead of black.

I sometimes think I should have a J, but whenever I have, I always reach for the P anyways. I'm pretty simple and caveman-like.

I would like to have an ABG to mess around on...I think having a fretless again would be cool, and I've always kind of longed for a nice hollowbody to string with flats. I also really like maple fingerboards too, but can get by on the rosewood. I'm not too particular I guess.

I can get along with nothing but a P and maybe, as I said, a close backup to it, especially if I started gigging again.

Fender Jazz as my primary bass when I have to do the vocals and a Modulus 5 for everything else. I prefer playing the Modulus but the long scale 5 is tougher to play when I'm doing a lot of vocals.

I totally agree. Whip out the Jazz when you need to cut through and pull out the P-bass when you need to really lay down the low end.
