If you were only allowed to have ONE passive and ONE active...

Got to talking with a friend about "Desert Island" situations and it lead to what instrument we'd take with us if we were only allowed one. So this is pretty much a continuation from that convo.

If, for some horrible reason, you were only allowed to own one passive and one active bass, and nothing more, what would your choices be?

Personally, my passive choice would be a Fender P with the split-coil pup. My active choice would be a EBMM Stingray HH. Two classics in their own rights but with enough touches to give me a world of different tones.

Lol, of course this "island" would have every commodity you could possibly want and need...but let's just say their only restriction is one of each configured bass.

Passive would be an American Special Precision (preferably modified with a Jazz neck).

Active is tougher...I've always wanted a Musicman Stingray, but I'm also in love with my Ibanez Soundgear model...would probably have to stick with my Ibby.

LPB Fender Jazz w/ black pickguard, chrome BA2/hardware & SD Antiquities pickups. Maple w/ black block P-bass neck

Trans-white Spector NS-5XL w/ chrome hardware. BEM fingerboard with black MOP inlays

Perhaps oddly, if I had to limit myself to those criteria I'm not sure I'd pick any of the basses I currently own! The whole notion of "That's it, no more!" as well as "You need to be able to accomplish anything with those two and only those two instruments" would have me second-guessing the versatility and universality of almost every bass in my current collection.

So off the top of my head I'm thinking
- passive: an early 1960s Fender Precision Bass with rosewood fingerboard & strung up with flatwounds
- active: a Sadowsky NYC 24-fret 5-string with maple fingerboard & strung up with stainless steel roundwounds

Funny. My wife and I are moving to Sydney. She flies out Feb. 2. Guess what I am bringing to my new "desert island" home?... my Fender Precision and my Alembic Epic.

I'd go with this too - only my Sadowsky would have Big Singles in the 60s J position, and nickel rounds.

You could cover a LOT of ground with just those 2.
