so, I just returned from the annual Reno Jazz Festival, with my high school jazz band.

It was a helluva lot of fun. played some awesome music, listened to some incredible bands (my favorite was Garfield High School), met some very HOT bass players (again, Garfield high, with others),
and got drunk to the point where I passed out in the bath tub, woke up the next morning, and didn't have a clue where or when I was. my friends had to fill me in on what had happened.


All in all, a great 4-day excursion.

And admitting to underage drinking in a public forum! Great job!

High school jazz is serious business... leave the drinking for college.

It's no excuse. I've seen really great musicians go under in high school because they get involved with other things. If there is anytime in your life to stay sober and work hard, high school is it... it's all about getting accepted to the right college (if you're looking to do music... or anything else). Yeah I drank and did some other things in HS, but I saw that it wasn't going to have a really good affect on anything, so I held off with those more until now (and I'm cutting back more). I've had friends lives get completely turned around because of just getting caught in the wrong situation once (one of my closest friends is/was an excellent student, went to a party, had a drink or two, waited a long time to drive home... his tail light was out, and the officer happened to breathalyze him at .02, the legal limit for minors... all his college apps had to have the "have you been convicted of a crime?" box checked... not the best way to make a good first impression).

Maybe it's different in your neck of the woods, but high school jazz is extremely competitive. You knew which players you'd be going up against for auditions and you saw them at all the competitions. High school jazz was really where I got my best foundation for my playing...

I'm not some old fogey (only 19, haha) but you just gotta be careful, that is all.

Or, have fun and get drunk after you have finished your performance, and just NEVER drink and drive. Seems like the way to do it to me!

When I was a trustee for the Reno Musicians' Union I helped get funding from the Music Performance Fund for the Reno Jazz Orchestra to play for that event. Did you get to see the RJO play? There are some really great players in that band.
