I'm finally doing it. Finally taking the step from 4 to 5

After talking about it for a year and half I've decided to sale my Traben and pick up a 5er.

So now I'm sitting on 200$ (wooo big spender lol) and looking for the nicest 5 string I can get in that price range.

I'm eyeballing a Peavey foundation, but I'm keeping my mind open.

What would you bass guru's recommend?

Please no Ibanez, Squire, or Fender as I'm not a big fan of any of those brands.

What about this? At the price I know it's not a MM or even an OLP, Tried getting a better look at the name but no such luck.

You'd be surprised what people don't know they have. Back when I first started playing I had a chance to pick up a Yamaha for 25$ Decided to pass because I was ignorant.

i would save a couple more bucks. for about $300, Ibanez has some killer 5 bangers. gl

ps: i'm not an Ibanez lover. i love Fender for life, but that Ibby i played at GC was smokin!

I went back. I like the feel of a 4 again, and I have changed up how I play which is always good. Every once in a while I wish I could hit a low D, but mostly a 4 covers my gigs. But that's another thread.

Exactly. Right now, my 44-02 is working great for me. In a year who knows, different gigs, whatever.

I do miss a low B at church sometimes, but the keyboard guy can cover that if needed.

got my first 5er in 1987 (new Gibson V).

"went back" so to speak and built a (4 string) Partcision in 2007.

still play all of them regularly, they each have their place and purpose

my recommendation is 2 part.

1. $200 is about the bottom of the market for a playable 5er IMO so save more cash to increase your choices in bass and get you as nice a bass as you can.
2. buy used. go play as many used basses as you can. you WILL get the most for your money that way. This would be the only way I could see to get a performance quality bass for near $200 IMO you will need more like $300 (I'm in the midwestern US also)

I'm thinking about getting an inexpensive 5 to have for church and maybe jazz gigs. The 4 is great for my horn band/cover band gigs.

I have recently seen used Squire 5ers going for $200. P's and J's. Haven't played any though, I HAVE played the (4 string) Vintage Modified and the Classic Vibe Jazz. Very impressive at that price ($250 to $350 new).

I took the plunge about a year ago with a used Hohner BBASS V.

It's a neck thru Maple with Rosewood board. Tight string spacing and very light weight. Thin, fast neck. P type body with Jazz PU configuration.

The electronics were shot, so I had it rewired passive by switching to 250K Pots. This thing really growls and is fun to play.
