I'm getting too old for rock concerts

The only time you will see me around a crowd or in a club is if I am playing!

The last concert I saw was Kiss about 4 years ago, and last New Years I saw Trooper in a semi private show, but that's it!!

So many acts have come through like ZZ Top, Def Leopard and Leonard Skynard to name but a few. I love them all but can't afford to go and can't be bothered! If I want to hear one of their songs I will learn it!

Now GET OFF MY LAWN AND TAKE THAT CHIP BAG WITH YOU!!! :spit::spit::rage::rage::poop::poop::poop:

;)

I feel the same way. However, my wife and I went to a Dave Koz concert at a popular outdoor venue (rock concerts are not the only ones with issues). Sure enough, a really tall guy, like 6-foot-four, comes in and sits down right in front of my wife. We switched seats. When the concert started, the guy slouched down in his seat so our view wasn't blocked (without being asked.) At intermission, he stood up - turns out it was Bill Medley. We chatted and I got a picture with him, just a really nice guy.

On the other hand, I have a lot of stories to the contrary, but I'm typing on my phone so ...

Cool story. I used to work for Bill Medley when he owned a club in Fountain Valley, I don't remember him being that tall! But he was a nice guy.

LOL...and I'm only 47. Last night, I took my family to see U2 in Detroit. Besides the usual ridiculously inflated ticket prices (having to buy on StubHub because nothing good is ever available on Ticketmaster), concert traffic, jacked up parking prices, long security lines, lousy concert sound, etc. -- I was actually having a great time. Until the drunk broad next to me punched me in the face, that is.

About 2/3 of the way through the show, the girls next to me got up from their seats. Immediately, a drunk middle-aged couple poured into the seats. Rude, obnoxious, annoying. This broad's style of dancing was to flail her arms like she was drowning. Lovely, I'm glad I paid hundreds for these seats. A couple songs later, she pulls out her cigarettes and starts to light up. I'm not having it. I tap her on the shoulder and said "that's not happening here...take it outside." She told me to f*off and lit up anyway. 49,999 other people in the stadium got the memo that Ford Field is a no-smoking venue, just like every other stadium in the USA. Not her, she's special. I turned around and got the attention of the usher, who immediately realized what was going on. Security arrived a couple minutes later and removed them from the seats. Zero tolerance, apparently. On the way out, the drunk chick told me to f*off again and back-handed me across the face. I guess I deserved it. Problem solved.

Maybe I'm a little too uptight? Probably because I seem to run into these idiots at every show I go to. Last year, we went to see the sold-out Steely Dan at the Hollywood Bowl. We got to our seats to find this meathead and his drunk friends in our seats. He wasn't about to move, and caused a huge scene before the ushers sorted everything out...disrupting the show for a good 15 minutes. Before he left, he got in my face like a drill sergeant and called me every name in the book in front of my 15 yr old daughter. Am I wrong for just wanting to sit in the seats I paid for? There were no other open seats...it was sold out.

Primus show a few months ago. We are sitting in the balcony with the 500 or so other people...all sitting...every last one...except for the guy right in front of me. I get it, it's a rock concert. People get excited and want to stand. I sat patiently staring at this guys back for a couple songs until I got tired of the people behind me asking to get the guy to sit down. When I tapped him on the shoulder, he told me to f*off and continued to stand. All by himself. Despite the fact that there was an acre of space to stand on the floor and mezzanine. An usher arrived eventually and moved the guy back to the cheap seat he actually paid for.

It's just getting to the point that it's just not worth the hassle and aggravation. Oh, and get off my lawn!

My takeaway from this is I'm NEVER going to a concert with YOU! :D

My perspective is that I am going to see as many of the greats while I can because they aren't going to be around much longer and the new crop of music is pretty abyssal (at least for rock). Don't mind paying top dollar for a great show and have not had to deal with anything more than a few humorous drunks in 20+ years of going to shows.

If you want to avoid the worst people don't get general admission tickets on the lawn. It's like a trailer park back there. I always get great seats and never pay above face value. Typically people paying to sit in the first 20 rows or so are diehards and are there for the music. Seems to be better company. You get what you pay for.

I had to tell a couple of (apparently) loud, drunk stockbrokers behind me in the 15th row of a Steely Dan show (Dodge Theater PHX) to STFU since no one wanted to hear about their deals in progress.

Some of the best shows I've attended have been lawn seats.

When seeing Primus, I tend to prefer the balcony if available. ;)

Went and saw Hiromi Trio Project last April.
20170322_201056.jpg

Very well behaved crowd.
No rambunctiousness.
No smoking pot.

The band?
A reasonable volume.
Not loud at all.
Paid $78.00

Pros:Hadrien Feraud.Jazz and Fusion may not be the top act.
But I don't have to pay an arm and a leg for good music.

Cons:No Anthony Jackson.
Jazz and Fusion bands don't come around often.
If they do,they are scheduled DURING the work week.

Did you say you are 47,,,,,,young pup you have many years or rocking in ya.

I enjoy concerts and go to 1 or 2 a year. Most recently my wife and I saw Doobie Brothers and Chicago....it was an outdoor event and a little hot, but the bands didn't disappoint. Yeah, the $40 parking, $100 tickets each, and $15 beers were expensive so we took water bottles, ate and drank before the concert and had the time of our lives jamming and singing to every song.

I won't go to any show at the Hampton Coliseum! Ever! Worst sound ever! Saw EWF/Chicago a couple years ago. That was a good experience. Sat on the lawn in beach chairs. I go to the Sunday shows at Buckroe Beach. The sound is fine. Sometimes can be loud though. Crowd isn't too bad. Lawn seating. But sometimes you get folks who setup in front of you and folks come and visit (everybody knows everybody) and they'll be standing and chatting blocking the view. It is what it is. At least we can move to a better viewing position if it comes to that. Folks are just rude and feel it's cool to do so.

I'm done with concerts as well. Last straw for me was paying $200 to see Sting in a small-ish venue and trying to deal with a group of drunk idiots in front of me that couldn't have cared less about what was happening onstage. My wife now called me the "concert curmudgeon," and she's right.

Only gig I didn't enjoy was Oasis at Wembley Stadium in 2000 and that's only because that band attracted the kind of manly men who fill a pint glass with wee and chuck it into the crowd.

Otherwise people are there for a good time and your good time isn't more important than theirs.

That said, mobile phone use at a gig is a big problem (not just gigs, when driving, walking, just everywhere) for me, a large number of people have no idea how to be in the moment.

Went to Ani DiFranco years ago at Wolftrap. Huge and beautiful outdoor amphitheater. Park Service employees are the ushers. They are extremely mellow and polite.

Ani comes on. This woman stands right in front of us and does the hippy dance. That sway tread air thing. The only person standing out of 7000. She didn't notice? Must be a special grade of cheeb.

I've been to a few concerts. :) When its slammin and everyone is up, Oh yeah! On slow songs people sit.

Saw Tower of Power at the Birchmere. In the first song the staff moves tables out of the auditorium to make dance space. :)

I saw David Gilmour at Radio City Music Hall in NYC last year. Best show I ever went to. It was great to see a major act in a small venue by Pink Floyd standards anyway ( JFK in Philly 1987 110k in attendance). No smoking, no standing, Guy Pratt was a bit loud but great show.

I feel your pain and sympathize with your plight. My wife and I go to a lot of live shows and I go to great lengths to get unobstructed view seats...on the aisle. This year, we're on track to attend 20 events, including a few Broadway shows and I have to say, the more Broadway shows I see, the more I appreciate them over a concert experience. Essentially, there are no bad nights. The sound, production, and talent are always top notch. And the audiences, far more civilized.

I fondly remember attending my first rock concert in 1982 as a teenager.

Fast forward to this morning: A local radio station is giving away tickets to an upcoming McCartney show at a 13,000-seat regional arena. As much as I'm a huge fan of his, he'd have to pay me to attend.

I didn't read the entire thread, and plenty of folks have already shared what would be my "me too" comment. Just want to add this. I went and saw the fantastic Phil Alvin with his band The Blasters. The last time I saw them was at Madam Wongs in LA's Chinatown. I think X was the headliner. Anyways, $20 and two opening acts later, the Blasters came out right on time and RIPPED for 90 minutes. Nonstop. And I had pretty good seats too. Here's the view I had:

Can't beat that for $20. Oh, and I parked for free right out front and there was no security check, just a nice doorman, a pleasant lady bartender, cold beer and nice folks of all ages enjoying the show. Yep, I'm too old for (big) rock concerts too. Gimme a small show any day.
