Buying a bass because it's cheap is just as stupid as buying one because it's expensive. Buy the bass you want and don't worry about the cost - unless you are financially strapped of course. If you go out to buy a $300 bass, you're going to biased towards basses in that range, just as if you go out to buy a $3000 bass, you'll be biased towards basses in that price range.

Playing a cheap bass doesn't make you any more special than playing an expensive one.

I'm not going to play it at 13 pounds, let someone else have at it I've got better standards.

T40, Cirrus and other top end models are more money but 80's USA Fury and Foundations are all over the place under $300 and weigh 9 or 10 lbs (maybe a bit less).

At the end of the day, I think everyone's just looking for the best bang for their buck. I think the whole thing here is just an array of opinions on diminishing returns and the value one assigns to the better qualities of a pricier instrument.
