San Diego (when not at Groom Lake)
We moved my daughter up to San Jose State this weekend for her first year of college. I drove the 450 miles up with all her stuff on Friday, and drove back with my wife today. (She and my daughter flew up on Friday.) Every cubic inch of the car was packed, so they had to take Uber from the airport to the hotel.

Coming home, we were at 80 mph for at least 250 miles on Interstate 5. The speed limit is 70 mph, but you're going to annoy a lot of people if you're running under 80. We drove right past a CHP hiding behind an off ramp, but who's he going to stop in a line of ten cars?

It's not physically demanding, but it takes constant concentration to hold up your end of a bunch of cars running together at that speed. I had a guy following me for a couple hundred miles, and every time I'd move over to let him by, he'd go with me. So we were kind of teamed up.

We got home in exactly eight hours, with three stops totaling about an hour and a half. Our main stop was at the Casa de Fruta east of Gilroy. Anyway, I'm pooped.

I never know how fast to drive in the states. I would expect 80 in a 70 to be perfectly safe from a speeding ticket point of view.

Not if you're in a municipality that derives a significant part of its revenue from traffic tickets. Ten mph over will often get you a ticket, but seven seems to be safe.

Whenever I drive for extended distances on interstates, I set the cruise control at the speed limit and drive stress free. It is astonishing how much more relaxed I am at the end of the trip.

I drove up the Valley last year, and there was a long line of cars (maybe 50) going 70 mph in both lanes. This went on for over 100 miles. I finally managed to work my way up to the slowpoke and saw that it was a white law-enforcement car with spotlights driving at 70 in the fast lane. I edged up to the side of the car and I could see that it had an insignia on the door, but as I got right up beside it I saw that it was a Fish and Game car. So I waved and hauled ass on by at 80. In the rear view I saw a stream of cars following me. Although I was disgusted that it took so long to get past him, I thought it was funny when the flood gates opened.

I love having speeding buddies on long highway runs. Mostly because I have time to develop fun fictions about them and where and what they're speeding to, but also because some have radar detectors :)
OK but, again, we ostensibly weren't speeding. Under the letter of the law we were, but under how the law is enforced, we weren't. I'd've had to imagine that about 90 percent of the cars on the road today. There was one woman who apparently couldn't stand to be behind me, so I'd move over, she'd go by, then after ten miles or so she'd be back in the slow lane doing 75, I'd go by with my comrades and, sure enough, she'd work her way back in front of me. It was weird.

OK but, we were speeding. Under the letter of the law you can't mate with farm animals, but under how the law is enforced and in the grand scheme of the universe, speeding relative to the capabilities of a common 1960's midsize sedan matters less than littering a vacant lot with a banana peel. Except for the crazies, we all speed. guh. leapfroggers. I always want to believe that they do it on purpose, but I'm certain that they're not, they just have no business piloting a two-ton death, mayhem, and transportation machine.
