Im preamp impaired, help!

Im a preamp novice, so before I possibly go out and buy something and mess it up Ive got a question. Can you run a preamp with a full on head or can you only run one with a power amp?

Im asking because I love my 700rbII, but I want the sound of tubes too. I have a sansamp bddi but while it DOES sound really cool, it does not sound like tubes to me.

My set up is ibanez sr1300->sansamp(sometimes)->700rbII->GK Neo 212

If it is possible and safe run a seperate preamp in place of the GK one(or however that would work) what one would you guys suggest for a hard rock/metal bass player? I like me some tubey grit. :)

You can run a preamp with a regular bass head or a combo amp. I have done this extensively with my DIY preamps, but it's the same deal with a commercial preamp.

You can feed it into the signal input of the head, or probably more commonly, bypass the controls of the head by feeding the external preamp into the effects return of the head.

As for what to recommend... sorry but I am a jazz guy. :D

Thats what that thing is for?! I always wondered lol. As you can tell Im not real techy, I just hunker down in my room and jam ha ha, thatnks alot man.

Any suggestions for a good gritty, dirty sounding tube pre people?

That's not "what its for" but that is a good, common alternate use. "What its for" is for putting line-level signal processors after the preamp but before the power section. But again, he's right that you can use the fx return jack as a way to bypass the built-in preamp.

For a dirty tube pre you might look at the Ampeg SVP-BSP, but you might actually also want to look at the Tech 21 RBI or RPM, or the Aguilar AGRO- they are not tube, but they do the gritty, dirty "tube" sound better than many "real" tube preamps.

Thanks alot for the help! Ill check some of these and figure out if I wanna do this or Im just full of G.A.S., which is the most likely scenario ha ha. Again, thanks fo the suggestions. I need to read some of your compressor reviews too...
