Saturday looks to be an unsettled weather day in the Mid Atlantic area. Snow, Rain, who knows. And of course a gig Saturday night and no cabinet covers for the PA or my bass cabinets. Anyone typically improvise with tarps, plastic bags etc?

Typically I buy covers for my stuff before I gig it
. Usually the trip between the van and the venue is quick enough not to damage stuff even without covers. If you're hauling stuff in an open pickup or trailer - well good luck with that

absolutely hate hauling anything uncovered. Is that the issue, or the actual load in?

All my gear is covered or cased for transport ... but I carry a couple of large tarps on outdoor gigs for that surprise rain shower that pops up.
There's some stretchy garbage bags that can slip over stuff.
Sometimes tarps and bungees or duck tape do it.

Always carry a couple of tarps in my truck. Never know when you might need them.
I've also used trash bags (XXL) over my speakers before.. but prefer not to have the speakers outside during inclement weather.
Yes, DUCT tape works for a quick tape job if transporting from outside to in, but it leaves residue behind, so I prefer black GAFFER tape for that purpose (among other things).
It costs more, but leaves no residue.

I make them out of heavy duty plastic sheeting and black vinyl tape. Not pretty if you look closely but they do the job.

Of course the storm never happened. But for the number of times I use a cover the plastic and vinyl sheeting sounds like it's worth a shot.

I just thunk a thought. Those dry cleaners bags,they already have a slit on top for the handle....
StudioSlips offers some very nice and inexpensive covers for just about anything you'd want. If they don't have the dimensions, you can provided them and they'll make what you want. For example, a Mackie 18" powered subwoofer:
