Impulse J Bass purchase. Thoughts?

Lets look at it realistically...its wood and metal. How is it possible people are shelling out thousands of dollars for the exact same thing under the guise of "Booteek".
ooohhh.....better "fit and finish" ***???

IKEA makes fine, functional affordable tables. They have wood tops and legs.

Does that mean that they are just as good as a handcrafted table made with superior materials and more care ?

Of course not. The IKEA table is perfectly fine, and works great for the vast majority of people....but it's not a high end, handcrafted walnut dining table.

The same goes for MIMs. They are decent quality, perfectly functional, great for the money instruments. And occasionally you'll find a really good one. But on the whole, they are not the same caliber as a Sadowsky, Fodera, Fender Custom Shop, etc.

My CRV is a great car. But it's not the equivalent of a Ferrari.

Just my $.02

I cant wait to hear! Im a little worried about the pups if I don't like it. I read the size of the rear one is different than the rest of the universe.

The pups are the SAME size as each other, whereas Fender usually uses a slightly longer pup at the bridge. I know Dimarzio's and EMG's can definitely be ordered in the correct sizes. Don't have
experience with trying to fit any other brands though, so measurements will be important.
To be honest though my MIM jazz deluxe sounded pretty good with the stock pups and pre.

I have never once been to a show and said, WOW! look at the finish on that bass.
Au contraire! I go to shows with the express hope of seeing (and hearing, of course) groovy basses. In the past few months I've seen a natural stained Ripper (nice, but less visually/tonally exciting than I had hoped), a white/tort Bass VI (pretty and sounded fabulous), a vintage sunburst P (delivered the goods as expected), and a Soviet-era Czech-made semi-hollow (vintage-cool with one of the best live bass sounds I've ever heard). I keep a running mental tally of wildlife sightings, and it's kind of the same with bass sightings.

OP: I'd be excited to see your new bass at a show, too. Looks sharp!

The Moms are so hit and miss. I have played some really great ones and some.....not so great. With GC, if you don't like it, you can just return it. If you like it and makes you happy, got nothing to lose.

.. I wouldn't worry too much, if you like the bass, the pickups aren't that difficult to swap out for a conventional size set (just in case they are not) ...A little tracing of the pup cover, a little router work on the bridge position, light sanding around the neck pup opening on the p/g and you are good to go ... I have done a few, and have it down to under a half hour ... I usually do a little shielding paint in the routes and control cavity while I have it open too, as there will likely be no shielding on here, Fender started adding that around '06 ... Or as mentioned pup sets are available in same size too ... There are several years worth of MIM Standards floating around out there with the same size pups ...

LPB looks great! ... Enjoy!! ;)

no question.... after 20yrs I decided to study theory.... and on a DB (just a student 3/4) ....BEEFY and What a difference when playing anything else with a neck...errr toothpick
Mine's a plywood Christopher I got second hand, and it's been dragged all over the place now. It was mostly pristine when I got it. It sure isn't any more. I suspect it had never been in a bar before I got it. It has been in a lot of bars now, and hasn't had an easy life at all.

It's a complete blast, and it's made me a better bass guitar player as well. Mostly because you have to think differently when you are playing an upright, and the rote patterns that I had from muscle memory all get challenged and changed by the big ol' doghouse. Switching back and forth between a six string guitar, bass guitar, and DB is great that way.

Yeah baby, CRV! Mine's a '99. Does that make it vintage or do I have to wait until it turns 20? The rust, scratches and dents? That's relic-ing baby! Unfortunately I "fixed" some of the relic-ing so maybe lost some of the mojo.
