In defense of duplicate bass threads

I can understand why someone may choose to start a thread that many of us think is duplicated. Matter of fact this subject may be a duplicate. Often when I do a search and go to a particular thread, there are pages and pages of post. Many of the posts have nothing to do with the subject and I don't have time to sort through the good, the bad and the ugly posts.

Additionally, some may choose to start a new thread to get fresh ideas.

Some may choose to post a new thread because they want to ask a very specific question that may be buried inside and 'duplicate' thread.

Use the search but if someone wants to post what may seem to be a duplicate, that's their right! An argument is that it takes up valuable server disk space. I've been a system administrator for 20 years and there are tons of space on these servers. It's our job to archive and clean files or otherwise make disk space available. Now, back to playing bass.

The problem is that 99% of the time the duplicate thread is from somebody who was too lazy to do any reading beforehand and just wanted to be spoonfed. Laziness is an insult deserving of no respect. The other 1% is usually aware/together enough to post "I did a search, but didn't find the info I was looking for". So no, you get no agreement from me.

In some way I agree with the OP. Lots of threads, the long ones, have too many useless posts, most of the time. I'm guilty of that, I did it too, few times.
But I've been trying to not do it anymore.

I agree, tho, that too many people are very lazy here around. Most of the time a little search helps.

Scew the search engine ... post all the duplicate threads you want to ... it doesn't bother me at all ...

But you know what does bother me???

Those damn posts that say we have discussed that before! Why don't you use the search engine! What's a matter with you? !@#$%^&*

I do have to agree that you should search around a bit to ensure that what has been posted in the past isn't concurrent to what you are about to ask. I do understand though that information from some time ago may no longer be pertinent or fully apply to now. Many things can change from even a year ago. I see no problem with posting wanting to get a renewed opinion/view of the topic. Unless it was just discussed like a week ago, or in some cases 2 threads down. I can see where that can be fairly annoying.

Forums thrive on communication. Mostly topics and conversations which have previously been visited prior that have either been cleverly masked as something different or that which time has numbed our memories to it. If there was a law on forums that you may never post a topic that has been posted before... ever. Forums would probably last a happy year or so before becoming ghost towns. Only useful as a reference archive except for the very few new things that come up here and there.

I know we have a lot of people around here that re-post topics here that may have JUST been answered. I do understand and generally agree that a little searching would easily gain them the fairly recent answer they are searching for.

What DOES get to me though is when a new member starts a post on something that's either a bit obscure or something the search engine may not like, just to have some random guy jump down his/her throat admonishing the person to use the search function. Then they "helpfully" give a link(s) they say they found using the search function and finish it off with rubbing the OPs face in it. Just to find the links they came up with are a year or more old and no longer really apply or contribute to the topic at hand as it applies today. Just burns and sours new members and turns them away from a large and rather useful source of information for our instrument and musicianship in general.

Sorry for the long post and all, but some of the hostility for some of the people who commit "re-posting" seems a bit out of hand. Almost as if some are awaiting to perform personal "witch hunts" to those who commit this "offense" the very moment they can refresh the topics page. If you feel it's been said before and not warranted another reply then do not even click the topic and move on. If you click on it thinking it as something different then don't post or direct the person in the right direction without admonishing the person.

How about people just skip over the threads that they would feel inclined to jump into and bitch about it being discussed before-do a seach.

Skipping over those threads works every time it's tried.

Give it a whirl sometime. You'd be SHOCKED how well it works.

.... or you could just keep being a crabby apple, and post your standard useless "do a seach" gripe post.

I'm with Ric5 and savit260. Chastizing posts have much less value to me than repeatedly asked questions.

This forum makes it really easy to get the gist of a thread just by mousing over it. If it's something someone's tired of seeing, I don't see the point in entering the discussion, unless there's some kind of hall monitor syndrome I'm unaware of.

How many new questions are left to be asked anyway? A lot of fun this place would be if all we did was search the archives.

Just because there is a post repeating a thread, no-one is obligating anyone to reply. If you have already seen it, either post the address of the old thread or skip to what YOU want to talk about. These are supposed to be open forums but some posters act like some areas belong to only them...because THEY don't want to discuss it anymore...no one is allowed to ask again. As far as threads going off on tangents, the moderators are at fault for not keeping them on topic!

I just noticed something in this thread so far.

The posters who say don't bother if you don't want to answer
and skip it...All have a link to where you can hear them playing and/or they are a little older (mature)

Everyone who boo-hood repete threads dont have a link to where you can hear them playing and/are in the 20's....hmmmm
