To answer OP;
Yes IEM gets your playing "in your face", like other said , if you play sloppy , it will be now be obvious. A lot of people don't like IEM for that reason.
The upside of this is that you learn to clean your act.

If you practice at home , use headphones if you can with the background track , it's a start.....

For the shakers subject , personaly , I feel the "Oumpf" by the PA.

I use in-ears every weekend at church. (The cover-band we don't use them.) The good thing for me is that it definately helps that no one person overpowers the stage sound mix (ie, guitards). And yes they seem to be a bit trebly and can be distracting w/string noise, but I cut 5K and up to solve that. They put it back-in in the FOH mix. Also, I don't think it matters which bass you use... .

The main deal for me is that I run only one IEM in my left ear and my right ear catches the ambient mix, both stage and house (I bought Boze Buds for a better bass response), and we use two large side fills for ambient stage presence. (I'm right-handed and have my controls off to the left which for whatever reason feels comfortable to me.) We [the musicians] were particular about having those side-fills. Too, I do like mixing-in the FOH in my left IEM which lets me know what the sound guy is doing. (Although we record each service, it still helps to have that mix in my monitor.)

I've always heard too that only one IEM can seriously damage hearing , anyone has a link to scientific facts about this subject ?

I'm having a discussion with someone.....

It's common sense. when you have one ear listening to a screaming wedge, you'll then turn up the IEM earpiece to compensate...'cept the earpiece is thisclose to your eardrum.

In a hybrid situation, one common (and very big) in-ear mistake is using only one earpiece. This exposes the open ear to all the SPL of the stage and forces the IEM to be turned up to stay in balance, ultimately leading to as much hearing damage as wedge-based monitoring. If you find musicians using only one earpiece, it's often because they're getting a mono mix and are simply trying to add dimension to what they hear. If their instrument is a mono source, then a second input or a reverb may be needed to create width.

I ordered Livewires with custom molds.. So far the Customer Service in the California office has been horrible.

if you need IEM info it seems those guys know alot about it.. Like us about basses

Completely agree--I used to do this (and am still often tempted to do so), but learned that your brain has some trouble figuring out what's going on--you'll generally end up turning up the IEM far too much because of that, which defeats the whole point!

I've used in-ears for just about 2 years now and will never go back.

I think I've mentioned it somewhere else within TB, but I recently bought some LiveWires--dual driver, custom molded. Beautiful. They even reproduce my B string--but fit is everything. If they don't fit well, you're not going to get the bass you need.

Yeah--it does look like LW is having production problems, but my guess is that's what happens when you sell a great product (custom mold, dual-driver) at that price!

Here's to hoping they get it cleaned up!

More than likely using them at either too high a volume, or using one in-ear and one out.

The nice thing about IEMs is that you can run them at a far less damaging volume than stage levels. When combined with the fact that IEMs isolate you from loud stage volumes, they can actually save your hearing.

I've noticed that since going to in-ears that the overall volumes reaching my ears are significantly quieter. No more ringing, or "numb" ears at the end of the night, I hear EVERYTHING I want to, perfectly (mixed in stereo, no less!) and I can fit my entire monitor system in my shirt pocket. But then I'm playing with mostly the same guys/ same set-up every gig.

In-ears are like a chainsaw: Use them correctly and they are great. Incorrectly... not so much.

Yeah i have been going around and around with them for weeks.. Finally i got a call today from the secretary that they will issue me a refund check.. Ill believe it when i see it in my Credit statement in my bank account..
Now the Livewire in Nashville are VERY GOOD. Stay Clear of the alifonia branch.
I could not deal with the california mess anymore and got a set of Westone ES2s... perfect fit first time out...

Here's the deal on LiveWires, for those who are interested: The company has split in half--half in CA, half in TN. The company in CA (kind of the original) is doing some pretty poor customer service; folks are trying desperately to get refunds. The company in TN is doing quite well, and also offering triple drivers.

Thats what i am afraid of. sending my set back and then waiting and waiting for my money to be returned. and never getting it.
I started that one thread on Headfi.
Here is a huge thread over there [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] that i joined in on.. many folks have had problems with the CA office.
So +1 to the Thumbs Down on CA.. Nashville is a big Thumbs UP though.
This is the second time in 3 years that i have run into something like this when dealing with a company... Perhaps my instance rate is higher due to the fact that i deal with many companies in my business.. :rollno:

Livewires CA has the poorest CS that i may have ever seen . I will telle everone to stear clear of them.

I have westones now and they CS is absolutley the best that i have experienced, next to the folks at Genz Benz here on the forum.. just incredibly good.

So now after months of me trying to get my money back from Livewires CA they said they will send me check #2450 .. that sounded so generic to me.. and like BS.. And im afraid that if i send them back i will not only be out my money but a set of spare parts too..
As i said in the Headfi thread. my right ear has had fit problems since day one...and i have not been able to get them fixed. or my money back....

I have alrady filed with the BBB regarding the matter...
