That looks like a Spector Rex with Rick pick-ups & a Fender neck. lol

Sidenote...what bridge would you suggest for taking a STOCK Set-neck EB-3 and turning it into a 5-er? It seems like it would be a good platform, with it's large headstock & 1.65" nut width.

Ric5 on the otherhand cranks out cool projects like they're going of style. I'm always inspired and frequently surprised by his creations :bassist:

I recently took my black SG bass out to play. This bass has a plywood cheapo Epiphone body, a cheap chinese neck, a stingray style pickup, and a Rickenbacker hb-1 pickup with a toggle for single/series/parallel operation. It is wired like a Rickenbacker 4003, and it has a stingray style bridge. And s few stickers. I thought the plywood body would make it sound awful, but to my surprise it is a good player and a good looker, Also it is nice and light and with my DIY straplok extender it does not have neck dive.

Anyway this bass is better than some of my expensive basses.

I think the stock neck on a eb0/eb3 bass is too slender at the heel to be a good 5 string bass. I put Eden necks on Epiphone bodies and I use an olp style bridge. It covers the 3 holes.

What are you gonna call this one? A Gib-Ray, maybe? Maybe you could do a EBMM cut on the headstock, to match the bridge. Or is the paddle too small to do a 4+1?

Whatever you do, I wanna see it, when it's done. I gotta give it to you, man. You come up with some crazy cool stuff.

Edit: Oops... hadn't noticed that bridge on your other builds, for some reason. Looks cool with the V/Alembic headstock, too. Was just throwing an idea out there... even if it was just a brain fart.

Hey Ric5..... love this thread and your creations!

I'm turning a 35 dollar pawnshop rescued P bass into a first bass for a lefty. At the moment, I'm waiting on tuners to arrive. Anyways.... how'd you make a straplok extender? I'm afraid this P will neck dive once I add the mexi-Fender tuners that are on their way via eBay.

Joining in, yes huge praise for Jeff thinking outside the box. Great concept and much appreciated. I enjoy building parts basses and as a lefty, there are not a ton of options for someone who wants narrow spacing, 34" scale, 20 or 21 frets. I plan to try this with a Warmoth Dinky-P lefty body in the next few months first with a converted MightyMite P-neck. If that bids well, a flipped Status graphite P-neck drilled for the 5th string. I'll post results here.

They should be officially named "Rath5's" or "Ric5's" !!

Oh and also I noticed Hipshot's A bridge is available in a .669 spacing. I have a message to Bill over there about whether or not this bridge might work in this situation. I'll post that finding as well.

It will get the pointy headstock with 2 + 3 tuners.

I have also been thinking of carving a Rickenbacker headstock and putting it on a SG body with 5 strings. Why? because I can.

It was quite wide. I had about 1/2" to the side of the E & G strings. I ended up returning that bass, though. Went with a Jackson CB-XV, instead.

I WILL, on the other hand, be doing a Fender P conversion and will surely need assistance on that one. ^_^

Is the Schaller 496 the bridge to use, or is there a better option that has the right spacing?

I start with a dunlap straplok and then I go to the local hardware store or home depot and get a 2 or 3 inch section of brass or copper tubing or pipe. I also need a screw that will be about an inch longer than the pipe. I cut the pipe to the length I want, then I drill out the straplok knob so the hole is a little larger. Then I grind down the head of the long screw so it will fit into the straplok. Then put it together and screw it in.

It is not the prettiest thing in the world but it is a great way to stop neck dive.

Do you find that the weight on the screw tends to bend it too much? That's a lot of force being put on that extension.
