My new KXB5 Build will have just 22 frets. So it will be a 34' scale. Not really a short scale bass but a shorter scale than the normal KXB5. I'm a little guy so when I'm playing an F that note should be right there for me. I'm not really a soloist so I won't miss the other two frets at all. Just my opinion but when a lot of cats play that high up it just sounds like dribble to me any way. Different strokes for different folks. A short scale JXB4 would be a gas to play though. Congrats Dave, I know your bass will be awesome!!!!

Brad Johnson hasa bass made from the same woods as mine (all maple) and he says it kills. More lows than ash, but brighter than Alder. It will be my slap machine. A note of trivia. Brads first Brubaker was all maple, my first USA Brubaker will be all maple as well. I think I'm starting out in the right direction.
I think the maple body is THE way to go!! Love mine! It kills over my Brute the way it can clearly be heard in the mix even at lower volume. When I'm financially able to place my order for my custom KXB-5 (or 6 maybe?) with dual soaps, I'm definitely going with soft maple body, maple neck, and BEM board. 
Spoke with Kevin today, asked me to put the word out that he's now officially available for repairs, paintwork and mods on non-Brubaker basses and guitars. I've been after him for years about doing this, considering the serious lack of repair options here.

Update. My KXB-5 will have the 34 5/8 scale and 24 frets. Kevin kinda overlooked that spec. Not a biggie IMO. He also put a BM board on my bass. It will be really nice and all natural, and all blonde.
Now that will be interesting as I have a pretty.....extensive repair I need done. I wonder if Kevin will be in my financial reach.
Wow, that'd be a big difference to me, but sounds like you're cool with it. Actually, my basses have roughly those specs (34.5 scale and 24 frets) and I like it....I mean if I wanted 34"/22 that'd be a big difference to me.

I just spoke with Kevin on the phone and all I can say is what a great guy to deal with. We went over specs for my bass and nailed down some things so we are on lock with my build. To add, he asked if he could call me? I really appreciate the concern and personal attention and attention to detail that I'm getting for my bass. This is not my first Brubaker purchase but it is my first USA Brubaker purchase and it will not be the last. All I can say is wow. I am so happy that I'm with Brubaker and these basses sound killer. Nothing else on the market sounds like them.

Been a while since the last update. I've been helping Kevin out with CS among other things, the new shop is up and running smoothly. Stopped by Washington Music Center with the newest model, the JXB Standard. It's a more affordable version of Kevin's J style basses and the first one out of the box is a monster.
It's a passive four string made for Jerry Jemmott. Alder body, Maple neck, Rosewood board, cherryburst finish with matching headstock. Weight came in at 8.1 lb. Babicz bridge, Hipshot Ultralight tuners. Sports the new Aguilar humcancelling single coil J pickups. David DeMarco wired the four controls: neck volume, bridge volume, master volume with push/pull and passive tone control. With the master volume in the lower position it has a great full range old school passive sound. Pull it up and this sums it up nicely...
It's hard to describe how big, full and aggressive it gets.
Moments like that don't happen often enough for me so this was especially fun. So far everyone who's heard it agrees... it's almost unbelievable. Including the folks at WMC who ordered some on the spot.

BTW A friend just hipped me to this Jerry Jemmott track from 1971, Bernard "Pretty" Purdie on drums...

The battery compartment is standard even though this is a passive bass... in the event someone wants to "upgrade"
to a preamp. There's basically two models, the passive JXB-JJ Standard and active JXB Standard, in fours and fives.
