Incoming NBD: 1972 P bass

Hello,
I have fallen victim to the all consuming illness that is GAS. I saw this 1972 P bass on Reverb. Everything besides the body, neck, and tuners have been replaced. I made an offer and got it for a great price, so that really doesn’t bother me. It was refin’d by MJT. I plan on restoring this bass to as it would have come in 1972. I already have a set of Fender P pickups from 1971, so the restoration should be a breeze. I will be selling the lollar overwound pup and vintage badass 2 bridge.

One thing concerns me. What color should I refinish it in? I am interested in any color that would have been part of the 1970-1972 color catalogue.

A new paint job would look odd with the worn alu pg. I too like it as it is, so, none, none more paint.

My favorite Fender color is Ocean Turquoise Metallic.

Haha. I actually am heavily considering tort. Might throw on a cheaper tort guard until I save up enough cash for either a spitfire or a real one from the 70’s.

possibly / probably the original neck plate, bezel, and neck screws there too. i wonder if the pots are original?

I vote Black with a white PG (pearloid).
But maybe because I already have a CAR, SB, and OLY bass.
If I didn't already have those colors?
CAR or BLK.

Put an aged black pickguard on it and call it done looks-wise.

I would install a vintage bridge and a black guard and leave the rest alone.

I wouldn't re finish that. MJT does excellent work. Might look better in person than it does in the pics. Just put a relic'd black pickguard on it and call it a day.

I also vote Olympic White (I am jonesing for a JB in white).

I have a 71 P, likewise I did the BadAss II bridge, brass nut and a SDQP pickup back in the 80's (very common mod back then). My pickguard has been replaced a couple of times (they tend to break around the output jack) and have replaced the pots at least three times (they wear out). Luckily I did keep the original covers, bridge and pickup.

Do it that snap crackle and pop finish looks terrible. Id go Shoreline gold and mint pickguard.

If it's already sporting an MJT finish, I'd leave it.

But if you are determined to refinish, how 'bout Firemist Silver (see below), Dakota Red or Ocean Turquoise? Go for something classic and appropriate, yet something you don't frequently see.
