"inexpensive" bass questions

There is a lot of stuff on here and on CL especially that is used well maintained. I'm sure the people who bought my previous basses off CL were quite happy as they were in pristine condition for a good price. Ibanez makes really nice stuff in the lower tier. G&L is very consistent if you want to spend a bit more.

You can get Squier VM Jags for stupid low prices on GC used online (we're talking $129 for the 34" scale ones). Neck is good on them and the pickups are decent too. Ibanez are always a steal when you buy used as well. For new, a sub $200 isn't going to get much. It's kind of like buying a car...if you bought a new car at a super low price, chances are it will be a worse investment than a better model car you buy used. So glad my folks scored me a used Ibby GSR200 instead of a First Act or Starcaster bass, that was a pretty sick Ibanez for a starting bass.

Any Squier that isn't an Affinity. To me, QC jumps miles ahead from Affinity to VM.

I have an SX PJ bass that I was given by a coworker that I rarely play, it's basically my backline bass if any local dudes or touring bands need to borrow a bass. It plays better than one of my squires. I would definitely recommend going around and trying out stuff so she can get a feel for what she likes. If it's of any interest though, I would be willing to part with the SX for just the cost of shipping. Christmas gift from a random TB'er! My only concern is if the bass doesn't feel right, I would be bummed they spent some of the bass fund on finding out they didn't like the bass :/

I don't know how good a relationship you have with the mom and the kid, or if they live in your 'burg (btw, Breuckelen misses you), but you've got a bass or two. Is there any ruse under which they might be at your house and ye olde "Oh, wraub plays bass! You wanna check out his basses?" might come up? It's not definitive, but you know the necks, weights, etc. of your instruments and might get some recon that would at least rule out some options (combined with some intel on her thoughts on her current Yamaha).

I also like the idea of the fullsize cardboard cutout "gift card" for a new bass.

I have considered this, and will suggest it. She is a good friend/former neighbor of ours, and her brother plays guitar in my band. :)

You and Breuckelen are missed as well. Often. ;)
