"inexpensive" bass questions

Don't really have much to go on.

However, I find that Peavey necks are usually nice and slim, and the basses are both affordable and durable.

But I'll wait before suggesting anything further until there's more info about what she likes/dislikes. You said no active?

Based on the particulars of this girl, I think active may be a recipe for mini-disaster. :D Hasn't been ruled out yet by mom, though.

Actives are never good for children or as a really reliable workhorse. Don't get me wrong, my Ibanez is by far my favourite Bass, but when I went on tour with my Band i took my Jazz Bass, cause i knew i could rely on the electronics.

Ask the parents what her favourite bands are and get her a passive bass that is closest to her idols

Good idea, but OP should def. buy used. These go for $75-100 and there are lots on the used market. I have one of these and it moved my Squier P Special to the back of the bus. I was worried about the thin neck, but it holds setup and tuning just fine. I'm not in love with the pickups although the neck p does as well as any other in the price range. Fretwork on my particular one was way better than I had any right to expect from a budget instrument.
