Infuriating. Honestly.

He didn't cost the store a sale, He MADE them a sale! The store lost the sale by stocking the wrong product and basically insulting the customer by saying he has bad taste in gear ("Ibanez sucks" but that's what the customer wants!)
Right on. The store had a lead on selling that guy a shiny new Ibanez and instead said "we don't want your money." Imagine getting a call for a paying job and turning it down because the tunes aren't up to your brilliant standard. The phone probably isn't going to ring too often after that.

If they're not an Ibanez dealer, they're not an Ibanez dealer.

Wow Max ... you're a genius. Thank you for showing me the light! I retract everything that I have thought or posted on this subject to date, and now fall into line as you wave the banner of logic! Hurrah!
Do you really need to be so combative?
made a thread , and now- YOU ARE BEHAVING LIKE THE "SALESMAN" from the FB post.

Try restating your point with more detail, corroborating anecdotes ETC not "You don't see it my way, therefore you are WRONG"

you have been insulting to people who DID read your post (and subsequent posts) have made measured, clearly well thought out counterpoints, and the insults fly!

You must have been a VERY successful salesman--- Hmm Were you the salesman who threw 2 paying customers out of the store in the FB post?
Would not surprise me, not in the least.

They're also not successful. If you have an opportunity to make a deal, you do it. Make the deal, don't not make the deal.

Because they don't carry Ibanez? The salesperson made a deal and had it ruined by someone that was showrooming amps. Sure, according to the post the salesperson went overboard, but we're only hearing one side of the story. From his/her perspective things may have happened differently.

It may have, sure. But if it did go down as stated, in which the salesman just says "nah, we don't carry Ibanez" and lets the customer walk...it's a pretty sad state of affairs for that business.

Or not. The story, unfortunately, is totally consistent with many experiences I've had in independent music stores.

It says that he was picking up his Fender American, so that seems that it was something specially ordered for him. Then he bailed on that bass after playing the Ibanez. So the store is now stuck with more inventory. That's a pretty crappy customer, IMO.

I just had a post pop up in my FB feed that really has me quite ticked off. The guy wrote:

"So, I went to a local music shop to check out a new bass combo amp. I brought my SR1405TE.
While I was playing, a guy is picking up his brand new Fender American Custom 5 string. I noticed him repeatedly looking my way. I wasn't doing anything fancy, just checking out the amp tone. He walked over to me and was listening intently. He asked me what bass I had. I showed him and offered to let him try it. He played it for a good 10 minutes and gave it back to me. He was a pretty good player. He asked me a few questions about it, especially about the Nordstrand pickups. After the short conversation he walked back to the counter with the new Fender bass and told the clerk that he didn't want it and instead wanted to order an SR1405. The clerk said that they didn't carry Ibanez products because they weren't very good instruments. The guy told the clerk that he may have thought they weren't good but that SR1405 made the Fender feel and sound like junk in comparison. He asked me where I got mine and I told him "on-line from Sweetwater with free shipping and no tax."
The clerk asked me to take my bass and leave the store....

Another Ibanez convert is born...."

As a former manager of a musical instrument store, this post shows EXACTLY the reason why so many GREAT small shops have closed their doors. No respect for the fact that people are trying to run a business and make a living, all the while providing a true service for their customers ... and have to put up with "test drivers" that come in to plunk away for hours, only to bargain shop online when it is time for the actual purchase. Infuriating.
My Ibanez 1980 Roadster will never be worth to someone else what it is worth to me. Same with my 89 Korean Squier strat. I wouldn't trade it for an American strat. And I wouldn't trade my Roadster for an American Precision or Jazz bass.
It's racism is what it is.

Glad you've made your obviously unsubstantiated claims against my experience and abilities clear. Thanks for chiming in!

that's the free market, my friend. if a brick-and-mortar shop offers inferior product, they deserve to go out of business.

Are you implying that customers don't have the right to return unsatisfactory products?

If so, please explain.

I'm sure we're all interested in hearing about this....
