Initial Review - 16x5" Dayton drivers Cabinet.

One 4-plex straight forward, the other two panels slanted back a bit.
Apparently these were made to sit on top of Big Ass Sub Boxes.

They sounded very nice with a mesa 400 running thru them.

this cab makes me long for my old 400+...

just saw this thread. that's something i have been contemplating for a while. i had kind of put it on the back burner. (i ended up building a couple of 112's that i have been gigging and tweaking for a few months now)

a couple of suggestions.
half sized box (as many people have said) 9 drivers 3 x 3 configuration. three groups of three wired series = 24 ohms. the three groups wired in parallel = 8 ohm box. two boxes = 4 ohms.

secondly, half inch ply will work quite well properly braced, cuts the weight of the cabinetry by about one third. (i might recieve some flack about that one)

finally get set up to spray the duratex, those brushmarks just kill me. (don't mean to sound harsh, feel free to pm me for tips i just want them to look good.)

if i get a chance i might knock up a box or two, but my time is short these days and i just made an agreement with a local amp builder to make some hardwood dovetailed amp head cabs. but you have definately got me thinking again. kudos for being the guy who had the guts to try it first.

if i had a way to haul them, i'd be in the process of a second one.

not that there's any need, but c'mon. can you just see the guitarists' faces when you roll up with a 32x5 rig???



BTW - the real acid test is tonight. i'm going gigging with it...

I had originally thought to put some corny phrase like "MO bassists, unite!", but that got the Wonder Twins stuck in my brain. And me, being a sturdily built carpenter, running around saying "Wonder Twin powers, activate" all day could damage my street creds at work (and I'm the boss, to boot).

So I'll just leave that as it stands, and say that this looks to be one of the coolest projects. I would never have guessed the speakers were worth looking at, much less listening to. But that's why I'm a carpenter and not a speaker designer. I'm very interested in your opinions after the gig tonight.

And... will you be taking a backup cab, or do you have faith?

both, sort of. i'm taking this as my only cabinet. but one of my guitarists is between amps right now, and will be playing through my guitar head and one of my other bass cabs. however, he's new to the band and will only be playing on our last three songs. so if i have to, i can use the cab he's going to play through.

mostly, though - i'm confident that this cab will get 'er done.

If I could take an "R" from my chest and turn thobbing back into throbbing, I might have a bit more street cred.(that's letterman from the electric company if anyone remembers)

So I just got back from Home depot, they cut me the plywood for two boxes. I had them cut at 3'h x 2'w x 1.5' deep OUTSIDE dimensions. I hope like heck this is right. I bought the size that used to be 5/8ths, I can't remember what fraction they use now. Also I made the front panel recessed into the front so I can put a grill onto it.

Now to order speakers.

i don't think that inside versus outside dimensions are going to make that much of a difference, but i could be wrong. according to my tape measure, the front baffle on mine is 34.5inches. which ought to yield a 36x24 outside dimension cab.

my box is of 3/4" ply, but 5/8" might work too. just be damned sure you brace it well. i've got four 3/4" by about 8" braces running front to back inside mine, glued in place in some dadoes that the builder cut for me.

front and back panels on mine are set in 3/4 inch.

OK cool, my back panel is not recessed, only the front, but other wise we're the same.
I couldn't remember what size ply you used, I was waffling between the 3/4 and 5/8. I will have to have a couple extra braces it looks like. Also I don't have any tools that can cut out the circles for the speakers, what did you use.

i think my builder used a roto zip and a circle template.

if it were me, and i had to go buy tools to do it with, i think i'd try damned hard to get ahold of a hole saw that size...
