Initial Review - 16x5" Dayton drivers Cabinet.

Bump. Is there a link to internal dimensions, size, port size, and reinforcement used?

cab dimensions are 3'x2'x1.5' external. wood is 3/4" baltic birch ply. front and back panels are set in 3/4". ports are 6" diameter, IIRC. reinforcement is a total of four braces, from the front baffle to the back. each is a piece of 3/4" ply, about 6 inches wide, spaced fairly even vertically.
 
I've been searching the archives and came across a few posts on beaming. Can someone get me up to speed on this and also tell me how a bunch of small speakers compare to their larger brothers when it comes to beaming.

I have done some cursory work attempting to model this, and have found that the differences are not huge. In both cases, there is a strong central beam, surrounded by side beams whose directional patterns are dependent on frequency.

As you go to a very large number of elements in the array, the side beams gain in strength, resulting in what is referred to as comb filtering, because at any given off-axis position, the response curve looks like a comb.

I don't know of a good source of information on this effect in acoustics, but there is a similar effect in optics:

ETA: With a big woofer, you might not notice the off-axis lobes if they are above the frequency response of the driver.

Beaming should not be confused with combing, the two are distinct. Beaming is purely a matter of the driver being too large compared to the wavelength produced. All drivers will beam if you go too high with them.

HEY MLW - How do you like it several months down the road?

I'm planning a small practice amp version using 4 drivers and came across your PJ knock-off. I had a similar wetdream over the winter and now am starting off small. Maybe grow it into 4 units to take out into the real world if it works out....

Still loving it, but it's got to go. Downsizing to a combo rig for gigging, and this cab is just too much.

I'm very interested in getting together the materials for one of these, I've always been intrigued by the PJB cabinets. However, I'm torn between a 5x16 and a Bill Fitzmaurice Omni 15 (or possibly two). Can anyone help me out with the decision? I'm looking for a fairly uncolored sound, with loads of top and bottom. I think either one would get me such.
