Injuries suck...

That's a huge bummer. Both the drummer and other guitar player in my band are approaching necessary knee replacements, and they're only in their mid 30's.

Hopefully subs are an option, but I know some bands/members aren't ok with using subs.

Can't he just duct tape the sticks to his arms? I swear that's how our drummer plays.

Seriously though, good luck and hope he's back at 100 after surgery. I'm not a fan of subs. My previous band had five guys and two of them were good drummers so we would only cancel shows if two guys couldn't make it.

We've had to bail on our last two shows because our drummer has carpal tunnel. He's probably getting surgery in a couple weeks (has consultation w/ doc today), so it looks like our summer as a band is pretty well shot. We've not scheduled anything else until he is better and by that time we'll be booking a month or two out. Oh well... Ish happens.
Ouch. You can't rush carpal tunnel recovery, especially if you want it to work.

If you don't want to get a sub, you could always look for a side project for the summer.

Find a sub for the drummer (or fire him ). Give the guitar player a week or two to rehab, then get him a stool to sit on on the stage. Boom! Problem solved.

But seriously, I hope your guys have a speedy recovery and you are back on stage in no time.

You could always put yourself out there as a sub. My band was slow for various reasons, so I put an ad on CL. I got 3 paying gigs within a month and a two offers that I refused.
There is always something to learn from different players and music!

Is it just one wrist? Maybe he could take some lessons from Rick Allen. Years ago the guitarist punched his car and broke some fingers. Put us out of commission for a while. We had two guitars so we took the time to learn new material. Had he not owned an old Volvo we would have back sooner, those cars are solid. Good luck.

Ha, yeah no dice on a sub. It would likely cause more trouble than it's worth. We don't have any shows booked now so we'll just lay low for a bit. Just a bummer is all. The guitar player and I are going to do some writing without the drummer and see how that goes. Maybe not so pretty with me switching between bass and drums!

I wonder if he’d be okay/prefer coming to your sessions just he can give some input (vocally, and not picking up the sticks).

Three summers ago I was working on my car. Trying to get the lower control arm off, my breaker bar slipped and I crushed my left hand down onto the garage floor with just about all my strength. Chipped the bone in my fingertip of my left ring finger, broke the nail about a half inch ABOVE the cuticle. Luckily I was not in a band at the time, because that took several months to heal to the point I could play again.
I feel for your drummer. Sucks indeed.

It was 5 weeks after knee replacement before my first gig. And I did take a stool. And I had my amazing wife do the heavy lifting during load-in. Before surgery I bought a rock-n-roller multi-cart to make it easy on her. She only had to help me load-in for about 6 weeks.
