Input on selecting a gigging bass amp/rig

Surprised Ampeg didn't make the list.

I went with a modular setup...

Ampeg PF-500 Head in a PF-210HE flip-top cabinet. This pretty much covers me for most situations. You can see where the volume knob is and I am playing with a hard hitting drummer with vintage TAMAs and a lead with a 150W all tube rectifier. This is all I need for practice, small venues with acoustic drums, and larger venues with FOH support.

Then, if the venue does not have good FOH, or of it's a much larger room, I add the PF-115HLF. It rounds out the bottom end more and add's more depth to my sound. Not to mention the change to 4ohm. I really love this setup because it's modular and I can make it for almost every occasion. And 2 smaller cabs are easier to move than one large one.

Well, the saga continues.

I've switched gears, still going with the Genz Benz GBE400, but have a deal in place for a Peavey 1x15 4ohm 300w cab that I'm going to use for a bit (on the ultra cheap), until it farts out or I throw it off a cliff lol j/k I'm sure it will sound fine.

Decided to compromise and still get the head and replace the Pawnshop Squier Jag with a nice Yamaha RBX775 I found a good deal on locally via another bassist.

As one of the other guys pointed out, no point in reproducing the sound of an instrument that needs work and I ain't prepared to drop any further cash on. Gonna cut an run on the Jag.

Will be on a better bass with (hopefully) no major issues that already has a full professional setup and at least have the GB head in-place with a workable cab. Can always buy a better bass cab down the road.

I honestly don't think any of us will be out doing a LOT of gigs anytime soon, so I've got time to hunt for a SOLID deal on some good 2x10's.

The GK neo 4x10 I found was a good deal, but at over 100# I just don't feel like fighting that up stairs or a fire escape to a gig or jam session. The (guess) 50-60# Peavey 1x15 should be something I can manage a lot better, as it's about the same weight as my hartke b60 combo practice amp. It's a bit heavy, but I can deal with that. I haven't decided whether to keep or sell it, from what I'm hearing most people do keep at least a smaller practice combo that's more portable (that has me thinking the Bugera, which is maybe 45 pounds tops, and a LOT of peak watts. Just need to hear it first before buying, I know where a BXD112 is available locally that I could hear in person with my bass).

Well, sorry to disappoint @Downunderwonder. Thanks to all for the advice, input and ideas, much of which I'll leverage when the time comes to jettison the older cab I picked up for the interim (instead of the 4x12 leviathan).

PLENTY of volume BWAHAHAHAHA

Consolation though, for all who commented, here's a photo of "the Amp that should not be" (I did have an appropriate beverage on it, but figured there would be policies against such things, so here's the PG-13 version):

So, I did a thing today... And I decided the Peavey must go the way of the dodo... lol

(*and the much-loathed Peavey is up for sale locally *fb marketplace* in Indianapolis, IN area if anyone is craving that Vintage Peavey tone and just can't get enough of it, lol... Also for sale locally *fb marketplace* in Indy is my Hartke B60 60W bass practice amp. I don't have the classified marketplace upgrade yet here or at Reverb.)

***BOOM!!!*** That looks like a honey!!

I was also going to vote for the GB head and the SWR 4x10 - probably because I have a 2x10 Goliath Jr. that I found in great condition for low dough. That cab is always eager to put out some healthy sound. The other cab I tracked down in that upgrade safari was an Acme Low B2. Even though these cabs aren't a matched pair, I've gigged them together and they haven't been any trouble. The SWR is no less lovable than the Acme.

Although I recently picked up a new GK MB 500 head which I haven't even had a chance to gig yet, I can honestly say that I'm always eyeballing both the GBE 400's as well as the GBE 600's that show up in the used market here and there. I got to play a gig some years ago using a GBE 400 that I rented from a shop. It sounded fantastic, but for some reason I didn't have enough of a clue at the time to buy it (or not enough money). Hoping yours brings you a long-term case of perma-grin.

As someone with a full stack of GenzBenz 410s and a GB Shuttle 9.0 head let me tell you, you are going to love how that compact rig performs. Best of all you're not going to buy any more amp gear. I bet you'll even feel weird because you don't want to buy more amp gear. ;)
