Nothing screams 80's like a Kubicki Ex Factor 
82 was an odd year for basses. Things seem to be transitioning at that time. The suggestions so far are spot on. The G & L basses of that era were awesome and possibly touched by Leo himself. Music Man basses of that era were great. I played an Ibanez Musician for a while back then. High quality basses! Alembic was king back then but more than you want to spend. Happy hunting.
It'll take a bit of looking but I'd go with a Peavey Fury.
I just bought a 20th anniversary Squier Affinity P Bass on the cheap off craigslist. Granted, they put the 20th Anniversary neck plate on every Squier made in 1982, so it's not special. But I'll sell it to you for way less than $2000. Gig bag included, but it says Fender on it, so I don't know if that breaks the deal...
