It was still the T-20 back in '82. And agreed - a great choice for '82. Even pair it up with a T-40 and you'll still be well under budget.
I was alive and playing gigs in 1982. Anything Fender-esque is not 1982 - that was an era where Fender wan't selling much. The bass that says "1982" more than any other (my opinion) is a Kramer metal neck - a Stagemaster if you can find one. It's the most "non-Fender" bass around - none of the parts that fit one will fit the other (the neck on a Kramer attaches in a very unique way), and it's got a vibe that fits that era very well.
Yes, it'll be a bit heavy, and it'll neck dive. While you're young, you won't care. When you're old like me, you can donate it to a kid that's young and doesn't care about that stuff (like I did).
If you don't want a Kramer, you need something pointy. A BC Rich Bich is a great (though pricey) option, though an 8 string is really off the beaten path nowadays. Seriously, a P or J, or anything remotely like them is not "1982"

I seem to recall purchasing a Spector NS-2 and a Steinberger around this time.
This may be tough to beat. There is some finish issues on the side that they are not showing well. I wouldn't care about that.

I owned one of their artist 8strings in the 80's...I always regretted letting it go, felt really well made.
Wow. I'm glad the early 80's G&L basses get so much love! I'd go for an L1000, but I'm very happy with this one for now.
I will note for the record that 1982 is the first year of production for the Vintage '57 Reissue Precision. I have no idea what they're going for now; I got mine for $425 sometime in the nineties. It was my main bass for a long time until I got my hands back on Rickenbackers after my original was stolen in '89.

I was also born in 1982. I previously owned an early 80s Peavey Foundation that was believed to be an 83 or 84. I'm not sure if they made them in 82 or not, but the one that I had was loaded with their excellent Super Ferrite pickups. They can be found for dirt cheap and are truly awesome sounding and playing basses. Similar neck to a Jazz but with a really snarly tone that I always enjoyed. I traded mine to someone here on TB years ago and definitely regret it.
