looking for suggestions for a Windows compatible interface for live recording (8ch analog I/O, at least 2ch of preamps, I'll use outboard for the rest) This will be a new setup based on a new i5 notebook - still trying to decide what OS is best supported by current recording products (I've read that Reaper doesn't support W10 yet?)
the band will be tracked live without much isolation. The goal is to get great sounds prior to recording so the mix will consist mostly of minor level adjustments.
I've never owned this type of product before; my 80s studio was tape based and my early 2000s studio used a Genex hard disk recorder - this will be my first time recording on a notebook. (If I ever win lotto, my most expensive purchase would be a ground up restoration of a Studer 1" 8 track; 8trk is the most manly of formats

Anyway, are any of the $500(+/-) models worthwhile, or do you need to get up closer to $1k to not be disappointed? Suggestions?
