Rear Wheel if it's American steel ( 70's - 90's muscle cars ) or Japanese 4wd modern vehicle ( Nissan GTR .. gawd I want one ) orrrrr my FWD Maxima . . . :/ I have to pick just one??? I'm a petrol head.

My favorite cover songs take the original idea and change it in some significant way that works for the band doing it.
2 examples:
Judas Priest doing Joan Baez' "Diamonds and Rust"
Devo doing the Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction"

Does your band play cover songs?

MAJOR props on that one. I completely agree.

I love the Indigo Girls live version ( 10,000 curfews ) of Down by the River. . . crazy good.

When I was in bands, sure, we played cover songs :) A couple that we did were pretty cool versions, I think.

The Plimsouls Oldest Story in the World and Split Endz I Got You ... tells ya how long ago I was in a band :D

What song cannot be covered? Why?

Anything by the Beatles. It is just not recommended for your safety ;)
I personally think that the Beatles are beyond what most bands have ever accomplished (In a revolutionary and impacting way), and should not be covered out of respect. Plus, it would be so cliche to cover the Beatles.


Since we on topic, least favorite cover?

Anything by Joni Mitchell or Jimi Hendrix. Beatles can be pulled off if you're really good (Stevie Wonder and EWF, for example) but nobody can make a Joni or Jimi cover work (people have died trying).

Cover song you just plain couldn't make work?

Frank Zappa - My Guitar wants to Kill Your Mama.

There are plenty of Beatles covers that are awesome, and in my opinion, much better than the Beatles. Examples - Got to get you into my life (EWF), Come Together (Meters), With a little help from my friends (Cocker), We can work it out (Stevie Wonder), etc.

Are the Beatles so popular because they were marketed incredibly well, and continue to be played over and over (and over) again? Is it a case of greatness by repetition?

I think the Beatles made great.music period. Without marketing I would listen to them over and over. They just had a major impact during their time. Being that I am in a later generation, I feel like I can experience those times just a bit more with having the Beatles playing and such. Don't get me wrong. I really dig iron butterfly, donovan, the zombies, crosby stills nash and young amongst others, but the Beatles have not only great music, but a piece of history.
And..
You got a point, Joe.cocker did a great cover of that song. I guess I meant more along the lines of new bands doing covers.
