Double Bass IP112: Anybody actually use one?

I have seen a few Bergie IP112's for sale on the bright (and trebly) BG side...and it got me thinking about whether anybody on the DB side ever got into this unit for regular gigging. If so, what preamp setup? I was a longtime HT112 user but never tried the IP.

There are a few folks here on the DB side that use this rig. Tom Bowlus favored it after the Ohio belchfest. I would suggest you use the search function, but do an advanced search and narrow the search to the TBDB - Amps, Mics & Pickups area of the forum. You will get quite a few results. Make sure you read the Ohio Belchfest thread, as there are a few comments in it from the participants, as I recall. (Also, as you are likely aware, there is a newer version of this cabinet called the IP112ER for extended range. This version was created to provide deeper lows, which may not be an improvement for DB. If you do go this route you will need to decide which version is better for your purposes.)

Thanks for your suggestions. I read the Ohio "belchfest" thread when it occurred and have a perfect recollection of the favorable comments. I also know how to use the search function very well. If you, perchance, re-read my question you will find I asked if anyone USES the IP112...not if anyone has tried the IP112 for upright. I have yet to hear of anyone who gigs regularly on DB with an IP112. If you can find evidence of the same via the search function I will, happily, stand corrected.

I am also aware of the IP112 ER.

I use a HT112 with a separate power amp, an old Electrovoice 7300. (It's essentially the same as an IP but you have to lug around the power amp separately.) I think the poweramp that Jim put into his IP line is, like the EV 7300, open to a very wide frequency range and uncolored. So when looking for the right preamp make sure there is HPF to roll off undesired low end from your piezo pickup (ie, below 35Hz).

I've used Fdecks preamp with good luck, but switched to the Sansamp para DI for more tone shaping options. I was looking into the Fishman Pro Plat eq for bass as well, but haven't tried one yet.

I can't say enough good things about those Bergantino cabs. I think they are exceptional for both BG and DB.

I did try an IP112 briefly when a colleague brought one over for me to check out. It was relatively light weight, especially when you factor in you can keep a preamp in your DB gig bag. To my ears it sounded the same as the HT112 w/separate poweramp.

Agree, I think Jim makes a great product in the HT112!

The big feature of the IP's (I think) was that custom DSP tuned to the cab...I was under the impression it provided some low end extension at high volumes, the likes of which most DB players never reach. You comment that it sounded pretty much like the HT112 at low volume is what I would expect.

The HT112 was already pretty heavy for its size so the weight of the IP version didn't make a big difference to me....moreover whether there was any functional advantage at jazz DB volumes. :)

Actually, when I was checking it out we got pretty loud. Unfortunately I never got to take it to a gig or try it out in different rooms. I was also using it with the same HPF that I used with the HT112, so if there was any low end extension on the IP the HPF may have quelled it.

It is by far the best. Believe me, I've tried a considerable amount of amps in the past, even AER's. I use it ( on my lefthanded carved bass) in combination with a Realist and the Fishman ProEQ Platinum. The thing is: Bergantino's design of the IP112 is actually unsurpassed and quite revolutionary: PA-technology + DSP-technology + power and volume (500 - 1000 W!!!) for double bass: perfect combination. An extra benefit is I can stand way back from the amp or very close to it and reduce the risk of feedback considerably. Bowing + pizz: both sound extremely well!!!
Give it a try, you won't be dissapointed

Jim went through a couple of different DSP programs on the IP112, trying to find the ideal low-end extension for that box. My guess is that what you heard was not the 'final' program.

I have been using the IP112 for a year and a half with great results. Realist/Sansamp and into IP. Have tried lots of amps over the years and even different pres with IP, Demeter, TD1, U5, Radial piezo, et al. And for consistency on small to medium DB gigs it has been great. Like any gig there is always one room that no bass rig will sound good in. I was using the IP stack with the Demeter for BG but didn't quite have the cut I was looking for so now have a Berg AE410. Sorry for the off topic bit but i am really digging Berg gear.
