iPad/iPhone app to jam w iTunes music?

Zoom B3, usb to your computer, headphones. Zoom B3n has an aux in added.

Plus you get a boatload of other cool stuff, fx, modeling, looper, drum machine, interface, tuner...

There’s other multi fx out there that’ll serve as a headphone amp and practice station.

The irig is pretty cheesy. But it’ll get the job done. Eats battery pretty quick, and sound is just ok.

iOS interface. I recommend irig pro, great interface; don’t get the super cheap one that costs like 30 that one sucks I’ve heard. I got the first version of the irig pro for like $25 on craigslist. The second version has a headphone jack in case your phone doesn’t.

then you can pretty much use any iOS DAW and make sure you go to settings and turn on “run app in background”. That way you can exit the app and play music on iTunes YouTube or whatever.
You can also close your iPad and keep everything running in the background, battery lasts forever that way.

Not sure if you are feeling this saucy, but the Darkglass Element has been a game changer for me. No need for apps that insist the music you want to jam to is in iTunes (cough cough, iRig/Amplitude), and you can run direct from your bass or pedals etc. into the Element, blend in your backing track, and done. And you can do it silently so you won't "annoy the neighbors". I see them occasionally come up used, but IMO, worth the sticker price. It can also be used as a speaker sim for recording...a little extra bonus.

Get a Vox Bass Amplug. It has changed my life. I used to do the one headphone off with bass amp thing as well as the mixer with music and bass running through.

I used an aux cord to run my phone audio through the Amplug. And then I bought a bluetooth transmitter that sticks on to the Amplug so that I don’t have to use the aux cord for the phone.

IMO the MightyPlug is really in a different league than the Amplug and it has the Bluetooth receiver built in.
I don’t get paid by n-ux, I just really think it’s great and deserves to be better known.

Bluetooth input is something that more of these type devices should have especially as phone mfg have maddeningly removed headphone jacks. But that’s a rant for a different thread & I don’t want to derail this one ;)

I started on the VOX bass amp plug, its a bargain for what it does but the quality is poor and mine broke after about a year. I picked up a Phil Jones Big head used off Reverb to replace it.

I know - its a really corny name - but I didn't name it. as the name implies, it will let you adjust the tempo and also modulate the relative key so you can practice in whatever key works best for you,
IE to adjust the key of the recording to where you want to sing / play etc. Slow down the tune to help work out an intricate run.
You can create a loop of a particular nasty section you need to work on and have it repeat it until you tell it to stop.
Even lets you add in a pause between loop plays so that you have a mental breather and prepare you that its starting over.

Honestly I use it more for guitar than bass. But it works great. I think its like $5. on the Apple App store.

transfer the song onto your iPhone, import the song into the app and you're good to go. If I'm home I'll just play the music from the phone through the home stereo.
if I'm no the road for & wanting hotel room practice work I carry a small pedal with me that lets me integrate the phone music and the bass into one signal with headphone output.

I ended up going with this:

it mixes nicely. Bluetooth from phone for audio. I have a wireless (2.4gz) headphone setup. So it all is working great right now. I took the ‘out’ from the last pedal in my chain.

In any case, you need to mix the signals so need a mixer.

Many practice amps have that built in.

options like the iRig accomplish much the same thing but with the mixer on your iDevice.

back in the old days I used a small table top mixer (Alesis MultiMix 8) - DI from amp, signal from phone - plug in headphones and mix to taste.

But now primarily use an audio interface connected to my computer but I also record a lot on top of jamming along with audio tracks.

Let us know how the Bluetooth is for latency. Can you play in sync with the music being routed through the mixer?
