IQ tests

However, I don't find GPA to be a good measure of intelligence. I suppose it can determine how much stuff a student memorized, but to me that's somewhat a waste. Tests are supposed to test understanding, but fall short of that in a lot of cases, especially when students get access to previous years exams. In college there were a lot of guys with high GPAs who would cram for tests and then brain dump everything. Ask them a question about something from a previous term and they'd likely only have a faint recollection of it.

well, i guess i didn't flesh out my argument. iq is supposed to be a measurement of general aptitude, but gpa is a very real measurement of achievement. as far as numbers go, i think one that measures achievement is more substantial, although there are problems that you mention with people who don't retain information and all that.

i think that vague notions like intelligence or smartness aren't nearly as significant as sustainable high performance and achievement.

To get her psychology degree, my wife needed guinea pigs, I mean, subjects, to practice giving IQ tests to. It is long and the sections are timed and when done properly cover a bunch of different intelligences. I did much better on the memorization that I thought I would - if I have to get three things at the store, I need to write it down.

That same sentence will work when plugging in the correct answer. There are other ways to eliminate the wrong answers as well. Or at least this is what I think your talking about. Do they look something like this?

Analogies are a load of crap. I can be taking a test and do great on everything, then get to the analogies and get just a few of them. I think my brain knows that they're useless and chooses not to know them or something. :p

I also think IQ tests are a load of crap. Online ones, at least. I don't know about the "real" ones, but I do think that it seems pretty impossible to tell how intelligent someone is with one test.

The online ones are just as legit as the "real" ones. They are both trivial and invented by some flawed human. It is a measure of an ideal; a bias. Thats why here in the U.S., we're all measured by how wealthy we are. The only true intelligence.
