is a 4x10 + 2x10 a good combination?

hey everyone, i'm new to the forum and did about an hours worth of searching and couldn't quite find a definite answer..
i've got an ampeg svt-450h and an swr goliath III 4x10, the cab is 8ohms and can handle 800 watts..long story short, i need the full 450w

after doing some research, i've already ruled out adding a 1x15 because it won't be able to compete, but i'm wondering if a 2x10 will be able to compete?

also, i might be able to get a used swr 2x10 for cheap that can handle 200w. i've tested my amp out with an 8x10 with my band and i only needed the volume at about half (gain at about half as well).

will i risk any damage to the 2x10 by hooking it up with the 4x10 while playing at half volume?

If you use an 8 ohm 210 together with an 8 ohm 410, the speakers in the 210 will each be receiving double the amplifier power as the ones in the 410. It's not optimal. Another 410 or perhaps a 212 would be a better match.
 
For what you've got, your best bet would be to add another 8-ohm Goliath III. If you had a 4-ohm 410, a matching 8-ohm 210 (with an amp that could handle the 2.6-ohm load) would be the hot set-up; mix and match to suit any gig. But with an 8-ohm 410, you're best off with a second one of the same, since an 8-ohm 210 means each driver in the 210 would be getting double the power of each driver in the 410.

Don't be so sure of that. It's extremely unlikely that the SWR can take more than 275 watts before reaching maximum excursion. So if it's more output you need it's not a matter of power, it's a matter of speaker displacement. That being the case, add another identical 4x10, that will give the best result.
 
hmm...see i thought maybe i'd go with the 2x10 instead of another 4x10 because of portability, but maybe i should just sell the 4x10 and get like a 1x15 and a 2x10 or something like that, even a 6x10 would work

well see, at 8ohms my amp only puts out like 250w, i've jammed with my band using just my head and my cab and i had to max the volume and it was just barely enough, whereas when i used a 4ohm 8x10 the one time, i had my volume at half and it was fine

Academically true, but an SWR 2x10 + 4x10 rig has a sound that I actually like better.

And here's how I got around that problem: get a 4ohm 2x10 and wire it's speakers in series. This makes the cab 16ohms. When combined in parallel with the 8ohm 4x10, you have a 5.3ohm load, and all 6 speakers receive the same amount of power. This setup has served me well for many years.
 
I've thought about getting a 8 ohm 2x10 to go with my 4 ohm 4x10 so all the sparkers get the same watts and i have a modular rig for different situations (sick of lugging a 4x10 were a 2x10 will do) but been lean towards a neo 4x10 lately. we'll see where the gas takes me.

I have a good friend who runs an Avatar 4 ohm 4x10 and 8 ohm 2x10. It's a great setup. Just make sure your amp goes down to 2 ohms.

This is indeed the way you should pair a 2x10 with a 4x10. Same applies for a 4Ω 4x10 and an 8Ω 2x10.

That's only one third due to the lower impedance. One third is due to the doubled sensitivity that results from having eight drivers instead of four, the other third from the height of the 8x10 that makes it easier for it to be heard, thus my recommendation.
