Saying a DJ isn't a musician is like saying a conductor isn't a musician. Both are (supposed to be) the musically educated "directors" of the music, one physically, one digitally. What difference does it make if someone's orchestrating Daft Punk or Debussy?
That would depend on whether or not one considers them as musicians. Obviously this poll does not agree with you.
Being a musician isn't about "invent some new notes and chords", it's about playing a musical instrument.
I would say this guy (a manualist) has more musical talent than the majority of DJs.
If you don't believe it, go into a club, step up to a DJ rig and try to make something good happen. You'll get booed of the stage just as quickly as a lousy band would.
If (non-instrument playing) djs are musicians, I guess we can call Karaoke singers musicians as well, right?
All the polls tells you is something about the demographic of Talkbass.
Yeah, real musicians.
If you're talking about DJs who just spin records and mix them for parties, then I wouldn't consider them musicians. But if you're talking about guys who mix sounds and scratch to create unique songs then of course, especially when scratching, which has its own unique sound and is very rhythmically centered. And if you're still not convinced, they actually have records with just notes sampled on them so some DJs could use them to compose songs live. I'd even consider Incubus' DJ a musician (not counting that he plays guitar too), even though I think a lot of times his DJing is more a gimmick than a big contribution to the band.

I would say a DJ could be an artist, but I wouldn't consider them musicians. That's not to say that they cannot create enjoyable music and entertain people.

How can someone who creates enjoyable music not be a musician?!?![]()
