is a flatback ampeg 810 an upgrade from a 2005 810AV?

I have the chance to pick up a 70's flatback 810
not sure what speakers are in it.
is it worth picking it up just for the box?

It depends. the original speakers cant handle a lot of power so depending on how loud you need it to go it may not be great. i have a late 70s cab and the speakers couldnt handle the volume. replaced them with legend b810s and it works a lot better now.

For $300 its a good deal assuming you dont need to replace the speakers though.

It will also sound very different from your AV. If you can use both at the same time then that will be all sorts of awesome.

Well it looks like someone picked it up if you didn't, so either you now know or you missed out ;)

Anyway, if you want power handling and tone, go with a newer one. If you want tone and don't give a rat's ass about power handling, go with a flatback, but only if it has the CTS alnicos. They were an especially great speaker that can't be duplicated and get the kind of power handling needed for most bassists these days. But if you can live with its limitations, it's freaking magic.
