Is an Acoustic bass worth it

If your point is to play without amp unplugged so The only one that is actually enough loud is the Stoll legendary acoustic bass (The Tacoma are also nice but pretty quiet)
Everything else is a waste of money





And if you want to play with a amp so you definitely can play with your
Precision and save the money

F'n ridiculous. FYI I do have some ABGs that I enjoy, but I never use em live.

For the "classic upright thump", just go with flatwounds + foam under bridge.

I hate them. I have one from an ensemble I did for a religious friend of mine, but I can't stand playing it. Since then I've always brought an electric and a small amp. I might be the only "not acoustic" one there, but at least I'm not frustrated AF trying to play anything.

I'ma guitar player with electrics & a classical guitar & a 12 string acoustic--but no six string still string acoustic.

I will be playing direct through a pa so I don't know that it would make any difference. Some of the band are not fans of fretless bass but I do use it for a few songs when we play live. I've played acoustic jam band, acoustic blues, acoustic country, and with a hillbilly string band, all with a J bass strug with nickel rounds and loaded with a set of split coil humbuckers through an old SWR 60W cube with a 10 and a horn. They all had some sort of drummer/percussion aspect except for the string band. I also played in a bar/party band and we'd alternate between electric and acoustic sets if the occasion called for it and I did those with the same bass and SWR cube for acoustic and and a couple of 126 cabinets and a BX500 for electric. So far, no complaints.

For the people saying that the band should buy me the bass isn't really called for. I love the guys in my band and this has been one of the best bands I have ever been in. Everyone in the group has spent their own money and contributed in their own way to help make our band better. These guys are great people and they are just putting in their own two cents and they probably would buy me one if I couldn't afford it. On the other hand, I am reading some great input that people have provided and it's helped tremendously. I'm going to order nylon wrapped strings and put them on the Precision bass. If for some reason I do order an acoustic, I am going to buy an Ibanez PCE14MH. It's affordable enough, easy to play, and I can plunk around on it on the front porch or the family room.

Cool. As long as your intonation on fretless is on, you'll be all good. Hope it's a great show

Here's the ABG I bought after going to acoustic sessions with a PBass, and feeling out of place. Although it obviously needs amplification, it fits well into the acoustic vibe with flats and the tone rolled off. Bonus is it is lightweight, comfortable, resistant to feedback, super easy to play, and also sounds great as an electric.
