Is Bandmix as useless as it seems?

I never had a lot of luck with it. That might be more of I was looking for a type of band that didn't use it.
What is now my blues project started there, although ironically no longer with the guy who originally made contact...
I think if you're hoping to be discovered there, it might not be your best investment, although just having a presence there is free...
If you're looking for people, $100/yr for the option to contact people directly might be worth it, although none of the people I contacted ever responded to my inquiries. That was for a tribute band position which is always a hard sell...

I think it's just outdated at this point. I'm guessing it was more active years ago.
I do still get a random email now and then with people pitching me projects based upon an old profile I posted years back that must still be up there somewhere though, so someone is still using it.

It works for me. I've found great players, and great situations have found me.
I've had one person contact me through it in the middle of lockdown when I wasn't doing any music.
Other people I know say they've had success with it.
I've never given them a dime so I'm not sure how it works for some of you that have to pay to contact others. I don't have that problem. Maybe that's a newer thing that wasn't the case when I joined?

I have found two bands with it, in both NY and Georgia, and have found a couple drummers. I used to pay for it, which was definitely more convenient, but no longer do.
I found three basement jams on Bandmix when that's what I was looking for and that's also how I found the band I'm in now.
Seemed to work for me while I was paying for a membership (no need to now, I'm happy with my playing situations and am not looking for anything else).

For R&B, Funk and Soul musicians.............yes! Absolutely useless. Funny though, I have been contacted by folks I already know and would NEVER work with!
I found 3 different bands there in the last 3 months:
I got more hits when I really put my profile together with video and pics of me at gigs etc.
- A corporate band offering $400/gig - fast changing set list, and travel by bus almost every weekend
- A basement project with a prima donna that has an ego the size of Lake Superior
- My current band that gigs about once a month

That happened to me through Craigslist all the time. Once I put an ad up for a guitar player and was contacted by the bassist I replaced in that band. Several other times I've been contacted by people I hoped to avoid.
There's one guy around here who used to write to everyone with an ad up chiding them for not putting identifying material in their original ad. "How are we supposed to know you're what you say you are?"
I would ignore him until the last time when I wrote back and told him that any time I tell people I know that I am looking for players I only hear from the people I don't want to play with, and it's very awkward to tell your friends that they don't meet your standards. If they don't know who I am, it's a little easier to skirt that issue. It's a small town, and the talent pool here is shallow.
I'm not here to alienate my fellow musicians and I wish everyone the best, but that doesn't mean I want to work with everyone.

I have gotten several inquiries, over the past couple of years... one resulted in a prog rock band, which I really enjoyed playing in... other than that, none struck my fancy.
The real pain is when you yourself are searching for the missing link for your path to stardom. A large percentage didn't have the decency to even decline... a few did, which is cool.
I do give credit to those who upload audio/video of themselves... a real time saver for those claiming 'expert' status.

I really think it depends on where you're located - bigger markets = more opportunity to find like minded souls. Where I am (KC area) it's pretty much useless. Lots of wannabe's and clueless wankers. Pretty much the same as you find on Craigslist.
Having said that I found my current band through CL ads and it's been great, 3+ years together and gigging regularly, so as they say YMMV. It may work for some depending on what you're looking for, but if I were to give it a grade on the 1 to 10 scale around here it's maybe a 3 if I'm being optimistic.
I used to have a profile there. I was contacted by a group of middle-aged beginners who had a "jam band" that needs a bassist. I turned it down.
A drummer my own age who lives just a few miles away from me wanted to start classic rock band and contacted me. I met with him and jammed a couple of times, but walked away from his project because his playing was always too loud and was severely lacking in a few other areas as well.
He started taking lessons soon after. He's a level-headed fellow, and his playing is improving since he began taking formal instruction. Maybe we'll play together again one day when he's more up to speed.
We're still friends today. We both ride motorcycles and bicycles as well.

I used to think BandMix was useless, but I started having more luck when I uploaded a recording of my playing (5 song segments, each about 20 seconds in length, of me playing along with recordings by Beck, Steely Dan, Queen, Jerry Reed and Blake Shelton).
My current band found me through BandMix. I almost joined another band through BandMix nearly two years ago, but COVID laid waste to that project.
So, yeah, it's worth it, but you have to be patient. And upload a recording! I think a photo also helps.

And boy, there isn't a shortage of "experts" on Bandmix either........
The main problem with that site is they make you pay to connect with people. We're mostly a buncha starving artists, us musicians I mean
Joined in November 2021 looking for a singer. The amount of people saying they can sing and not posting any audio is astounding. I was dumb enough to message them. Two people sent me cell phone videos after I bugged them about it twice. One dude had no idea how to sing anything rock and the other dude was decent, but needed some lessons. I thanked them regardless. 4 people messaged me back out of 30 messages I sent. It really comes down to the city/demographic you are looking for.
On a side note, a buddy of mine was able to put two bands together from bandmix. Right place, right time. I am cancelling my subscription on January 5, 2022.
