Is Bass Worth Picking Up?

I'm a new bass player, started with a guitar a few years ago then bought a bass, now I'm focusing more on the bass. One of the things that I really liked about the bass was the tone of the low end. I always liked funky music and while growing up followed the beat rather than the guitar or singer. A drum set was too big and loud so went with a bass. 
Also when I used to help at a local church my manager was a great bass player, who made me listen to each instrument and why the bass was important. In the beginning it was really hard to hear the bass, I kept thinking it was the kick drum or guitar, but now that I really look for it, I find it's in every song.
The only song I think I heard it missing is some White Stripes stuff, and it sounds really thin, but that's the sound they are looking for.

I asked earlier, but don't think I got a response. How can I tell the difference between a bass amp and a guitar amp? Also, what are some things I should look for when buying a used bass and amp?

You need to go away and ask yourself whether or not YOU find any value in deciding to learn bass.

no it isn't.. I wrote piece for string quartet and triangle... the triangle played one note in the entire piece...one barely audible note in amongst a very loud & dense section
that instrument wasn't as important as the others.. no-one could actually hear it
Bass is really easy compared to guitar, so go for it. In a few hours, you should be able to play like Jaco or Flea.
I don't think there are any instruments in a band that are more important than another. And, I'm just talking about your typical instruments, Bass, Elec, Acoustic, drums, etc. I'm not saying that if you have a kazoo in your band that it is important as a guitar, but you get my drift. A band has moving parts, like a car. You might say that an expensive $3,000 engine in your r/t charger is more important than the a $100 dollar battery, but it doesn't negate the fact that you have to have both in order for your car to run correctly, If you take the bass, guitar, drums, etc, out of a band it will cause the band to not function properly, if at all.
Should I get one of those kits?
Or should I get a used bass and amp?

If you have a GC within driving distance, sometimes they have in store specials. I got lucky in January and picked up a new Yamaha RBX170 for $95. If you can afford to be patient, maybe you'll have similar luck. The store nearest me doesn't seem to discount amps very often. I'll probably end up going used on a head/cab.

Notice how even a great guitarist like petrucci (dream theater) depends so heavily on bass.. specially in the clean section where it calms down, listen to how the bass makes everything sound right.. you just cant go wrong with it
With that beeing said.. i will add that bass is a great way of meeting new people and making good friends, ive met a lot of new people just because i played bass and was invited to jam with them for 2 songs or maybe more at local gigs, ended up with many new good friends..
Also, yes, indeed the bass is the most important instrument along with the drums, you take out the guitar part and you end up with a full sound song, you take bass out and you get a hollow and empty box with drums ass the bottom and guiar as the top, but the inside totally empty.. see what i mean?
Also its just an awesomely fun instrument to play just give it a try and let us know what was your choice

Yeah, I'll look at GC, but I also don't mind buying online, if it's a better deal. If it helps, I like the bass in Korn, but as well as some other bands in different genres, like RHCP, but in a band, I'd want to play more 'hardcore'.

If your in a band?......the whole bands sound is the important thing....we bass players have a place in the band we lock onto the drummers kick and stay there..if we dont. the song has no bottom no foundation hense the song goes to pot..the lay person dances to the beat..that is the bass,drummer and keyboards(if available) the guitarists altho vital is what people hear the bass is what they feel.

Whatever you do, DONT get one of em starter packages, believe me I went down that road (im dirt cheap) and regretted it (theyre overpriced hehe and not worth anything near the 200-400 they cost these days), you're of better with an SX or a Rogue (although with buying a rogue your rolling the dice I got lucky and got myself one of the few good ones), or even better a danelectro (awesome and low priced), as for an amp id search craigslist (I got my Peavey Basic 112 and my Danelectro rumor bass for 150$ on craigslist, and this combo will blow the living smoke out of any amp that comes in a bass package out there)
