Is blues a dying art?

You know what - I agree with your statement. You have identified the problem. ;)
The problem according to you...you think you are right and the majority of fans are wacked.

Artists and self proclaimed purists, like yourself, do not define a genre all by themselves...fans are a pretty important piece of that puzzle.

The Raconteurs have not promoted themselves as a blues band and throwing one or two bluesy numbers into their repertoire is not going to establish them as an authentic blues act or do anything to keep the blues torch buring.

Everybody's raggin' on One Four Five
I'll tell you this and it ain't no jive.
If you want a Four but ain't got no mo'
Grab a Three and give it a go.

All songs ever written regardless of time or genre can be played with only 1 IV V. All other chords in a song are substitution chords.
Anybody who thinks blues is all I IV V 12 bars doesn't know much about blues.
From blues we got rock and country. Yes, I know Celtic music from the Appalachian area was a major influence on country, but without blues, it would still be bluegrass.

Hang on there cowboy! Of course it's the problem according to me, it's an opinion, but I never said the majority of fans are whacked....where did I say that? The guys I cited simply don't do it for me.

As for the Raconteurs, no they don't present themselves as a blues band, and I don't think they are a blues band. Of course not. But I will say that Jack White, through different projects, has done more to bring the blues form to a new generation, and has done more to move it forward (rather than play a stale, cliche filled, version of it) than say, the artists that I mentioned. He absolutely keeps the torch burning.

I'd say the same thing about Zeppelin vs. (post Cream) Clapton back in the day.

I am neither a purist (that should be clear), nor an "artist". Someone has mentioned RL Burnside, I think he's great, even though he's not creating a blues for the 21st century.

I am a fan of what speaks to me, that's all.

And yes - everything I said is my opinion.....blah blah blah...... Do we really need to point that out?

Sheesh.

I can tell you that if the blues is spending much time in the Philly dive bar where I attended an open blues jam on Sunday, it will be dying of lung cancer soon. Smoky blues with an extra helping of smoke on the side.
It's been so long since I've been in a 'smoking' establishment that I had thought they were actually banned here. Not so, evidently...
If that's what it takes, I can maybe do 3 hrs a month, but it won't be as much fun as if I could actually breathe.

I love Robert Johnson and what i would call "origional" blues but, the genre hasn't stretched out much. I guess it matters how far out you want to take it and still call it blues. modern country is not what I would call country and Hank Sr would roll over in his grave if he could hear it. And lets be honest, how many songs that sound the same in a row can you take at a live gig? Same chord changes, same lyric format, etc.

I love it...you make a snarky, baiting comment and then come out swinging when you are called out.

You said I "identified the problem" by stating that the majority of blues fans would not agree with your opinion. This is you asserting that your opinion is more valuable (or at least less problematic) than theirs.

It is simply narrow minded to proclaim that Joe Bonamassa or Gary Clarke Jr or any of the other guys on your hate list are somehow less important to the blues just because you don't feel them.

Blues is the root of so many modern genres and bands.
As said before, the main thing happened half a century ago and people are set in their minds about what's blues and what's not. So if you take blues and try to bring it to 2014, it'll not be called blues anymore.
Sure it is..blues is a style of music that's been played by many and there are hundreds of great musicians playing it today, as we type! The blues is not a sacred rite that is forbidden in modern times.

If playing blues is wrong...I don't wanna be right!

Dude, really?

Nobody is swinging here. Well, at least I'm not.
