It’s not so much inflation as it is how more and more businesses are experimenting with raising their prices now that people have shown more willingness to tolerate increased prices. Businesses began to suspect they were “leaving money on the table” and decided to do something about it.
A business doesn’t need to “justify” their pricing with reasons. Smart businesses just charge what they hope the market will bear. It’s easy to test by gradually increasing your price tag until purchases drop off. Then lower it back down to the price just below it.
In economics that’s referred to as the price elasticity of demand. Which is basically a measure of how much the demand for a product (i.e. quantity being purchased) is affected by a price change.
