Thanks Buzzbass I had your goal at one time nicknamed Hercu-bass by my friends ha ha ha I am not envious of my cross fit workout either but I can't hang and bang like in the past L4 and L5 screwed up so with it still in my blood at least I get to train again :) Good luck with your future goal of hitting the stage. Forgot to ask do you have your pro card?

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA - Pro Card !?!?!?! I wish I was at that level. I do have a training buddy, Tim Santiago, who just did get his pro card at the NPC Universe in July. He's a "Mens Physique" competitor though. You know, those model type panzies in board shorts, LOL. I bust his balls all the time about training with the monsters, but he hasn't taken me up on it. If I do compete next year, he's going to help me with my diet and prep. See, I've figured out how to get big, that's easy. I never have figured out how to get really shredded though. Perosnally, I rather look like Marius Polzonowski, the "World's Strongest Man" competitor. Yet strangely, I'm really interested in lifting that kind of weight, I just want to look like I can. Dorian Yates would be my all time role model.

PS, I have had L3 & L4 herniated for about 25 yrs. You learn to work around it.

Hey Slo, take a trip to NJ and come train with us. It would be fun.

RTSLINGER, we should meet up & train sometime.
I wish Buzz I haven't been able to do more than moderate weight since I fell off a cliff my spine is screwed not just herniated I push L4 and L5 inward toward my abdomen I wasn't lucky enough to just fall off the cliff about 40 ft or so I landed left hip on a about 24'' wide 6" high boulder when I hit the bottom it was like electric shock went through my entire body not to mention all of my air came out. I fell from a high enough height that I was trying to use my martial arts training to reduce my injuries I tucked my head I hand my arms out to my sides like you do when you hit the mat I wasn't figuring on the rock. I was able to roll off the rock and laid there till my young kids helped me up. I was able to walk a little until I sat down and both of my legs locked in the bent position and I wasn't able to move. That was scary, but they loosen up I figured I hurt myself, but I figured if I could walk I was okay. But like three days later I had so much pain I knew I had to go to the doctor. He took xrays and saw the spine curved and L4/L5 push forward but L4 was worse in and on an angle what the hell! He tested for nerve damage and sure why not right thumb. So I was in pain everyday from Nov 29th 2010 up until I bought my inversion table for Xmas 2013. I was in pain 24-7 taking two alveve everyday every 4 hours to push away the pain so I could work. With the help of the pills I did my push ups worked out with the rubber strength bands. The band thing was no amp turned to direct box only with modeling pedal so I could continue to gig. I had to back off the pills every once in a while so there were days it was so bad I felt like jumping off a bridge no sh$t. But man the inversion table saved me, I started to hang upside down and get a good 20 minute stretch and just this year I brought an amp back into my shows. I am still working out to stay in shape but not making it to the gym as often and when I do go it is only for like 45 minutes in and out no back work yet just dumbbells sadly but hey I am going to continue to push it little by little so someday I hope to take you up on that offer :) As for your Pro Card if you are in shape at 220 and ripped you could go for the over 40 or over 50 you never know stranger things have happened and Yeah Yates was a monster but I think Andreas Munzer in his day was mine. Mariusz Pudzianowski 5x World strongest man is a monster I am a big fan of the Strongman comps. I always like Magnús because he was a good rep for the sport always smiling not to mention he platform Squatted 437.5kgs/964.5lbs. at a body weight of 287 lbs!

The other thing to consider is that, as we age, we begin to lose muscle mass at an increasing rate, and this can often lead to senior people getting injured from even the most basic activities. Now I'm not saying grandpa needs to be able to squat 350lbs, but I am saying that regular and consistent weight/resistance training is very important for aging people.

I would like to change this a little if I could increasingly alarming rate :) I melted after my injury forced me to stop hitting the weights 218 or more well into my 50's now cracking the scale at 195 on a good day:thumbsdown:.

Wow, holy crappola ! I'm glad you're doing better. Kudos to you for not using it as an excuse to lay on the couch. I think I'm going to do an over 50 show next year, and see what happens. In all reality though, I just lift because I like to. All that other stuff is just to have something different to work towards. Besides I don't relish the idea of standing in front of an audience ina bananna hammock. We should still neet up and train, you do your thing and i'll do mine. Have you considered giving Yoga a try ? It's done wonders for me.

I have go through something similar although not nearly as dramatic as you. I broke my ankle on a wilderness trip and decided that it was just a sprain and I would tough it out. I ended up hiking 27 mile carrying a 60 pound pack.
Went to the doctor when I returned to civilization and he told me my ankle was broken in three places. Had surgery the next day.
Turns out all the hiking on the broken ankle crushed the cartilage in that joint. It is now bone on bone. The doctor suggested I might want to have that joint fused some day but I don't like that option. It has been eleven years and the ankle has not gotten any worse. No more 20 mile hikes, jogging, windsurfing or snow skiing. But I still cycle and I can swim all I want. I have spent weeks on trips hiking all over strange foreign countries. The doctor said I wouldn't be able to do that. I just know my limits and when to take breaks. I also wear nice sturdy hiking boots and take Advil with me. The doctor also said my ankle was going to get worse. Pah! I choose to live my life and not put limits on myself without good cause no matter what my wife says. ;) (She has given up on that).
The trick is not to be defined by your injury. I don't want to be known as the guy with the gimpy ankle. I would rather be known as a guy who likes to have fun and brings a positive energy with him.

I think the key to all this stuff is being sensitive to your body, while pushing it to be stronger and healthier every day. I know nothing of the science behind heavy lifting, but it only stands to reason that if it isn't done wisely it could be harmful, if not disastrous. I've lifted on and off my entire life, but have been completely committed for the past 14 years. Just got my body fat tested yesterday and I'm between 15% & 16% which I'm very happy about. I'm not huge by any means, but people who don't know me think I'm a tough guy :). I only lift heavy nowadays about 2X a month for each body part. I mix my routines up all the time, and I enjoy lifting light weight with lots of reps most. I think my body enjoys that the most also. Started recently doing even 100 reps with really light weight. If I'm really burning out the last 20 reps I feel it more the next day than when I go heavy.

I couldn't agree with this more.

I had doctors tell me things were going to get worse regarding my ankles, and some other joint problems I've had over the years. My ankles were so bad at one point that my wife went to get me a wheelchair (my pride hobbled me through though without winding up using it) when we were vacationing a few years back at Epcot center. I refused to believe this was the end of my running and walking days. I started doing different exercises to strengthen my ankles. I laid off the running for a year. I made a few other changes. I kept putting positive energy into my body through similar means that I know you do, and this summer I was back to running 5 miles 3 times a week with no ankle pain whatsoever. Doctors have their place in our lives, for sure, but I'm really careful regarding the things they tell me and ultimately trust myself more than I trust them. I have to spend the rest of my life with me. They don't.
