Is it common in the USA to...

I think the best model for an original band to make it in the USA is to play a lot of covers and then get a following and then start playing originals
Friend of mine has a reggae band that plays around Daytona Beach. That's exactly what they did.

Just came out with an album of their own material. The crowd loves their Bob Marley (who doesn't) and the band peppers their original songs throughout the set now- playing as much original stuff as covers or more.

The genre and venue helps- with roots reggae at the beach it's as much about the vibe and flow as playing the tunes people know. The audience is pretty receptive and the music helps the bar sell a lot of Corona and Red Stripe.
