Is it just me, or do Ampeg SVTs not do it for you?

I bought a bass off a guy on CL a while ago, and checked it out in a Guitar Center to see if it was worth buying. Plugged it into a number of amps and the Ampegs they had sounded utterly anemic through the 8x10. The cheapie new Acoustics sounded way better, but still nothing like my good old Acoustic 450s with a pair of 15s.

Then I went to a small concert (outdoors, granted) where the bassist was playing with an Ampeg SVT and 810...and it was weak weak weak! I could hear it, I guess, but I couldn't feel a damn thing!

Is this only the case with newer Ampeg units, or are the vintage ones just as lame?

The only thing that "totally sucks" on a good SVT is the weight IMO.

My Ampeg 810 makes my chest shake and rumble... If I e.q. it poorly, it won't, but I've never had it not do that.

I'm not dissing your "e.q. skills" either.

Yeah, I'll admit, I didn't spend much time trying to tweak it, as I was there to test the bass and not the amp...How long do the tubes take to warm up?

It's probably not you; it's probably everyone else. I imagine all the people who've ever played 'em and loved 'em were delirious and just plain unable to see the suckage.

You may not like the tone, but a properly working SVT is one of the best bass amps made IMO.

I've just accepted I don't like what nearly everyone else does, and that is Ampeg.
