The worst part about being a pro is doing your best on a crap gig with jerks, to make everyone think it was an awesome experience - even though you can't wait to leave.

Be the guy who does good work and everyone likes, despite your true feelings.

In fact, let's go out on a limb and say it's ok to praise all people for a job well done, and treat others like human beings. Heresy, I know.

Granted if you are talking about playing a party in somebody's basement, you might not be able to afford a good sound man. But if you are playing in front of people who have paid to see you, you are making a huge mistake not bringing the best soundman you can find.

First impressions are everything. How many times have you (and most of us) slagged on a band because their mix sucked and it made a maybe ok band sound really horrible, or worse a great band sound like horse poop?

Even if you must dig in your pocket, if people are paying to see you, you owe it to the people coming to see what they hope is a good band and to the years you have been working your chops out to make the best 1st impression you can.

Every gig is another chance to make a 1st impression. You are marked, branded, hailed or vilified by this performance. Don't screw yourself. Music is not about the money, it is about image and how you come across, if you ever want to play the better gigs and be noticed. Then you can put your $35 in your pocket after you've played MSG. Until then hand it over to the best sound man you can find. You 100% live and die by your house sound.
