Is it odd to only own basses from a single manufacturer?

Dang I would be happy with just two Zons...:D
Seriously I only own two basses myself, both G&Ls, one is a backup in case the other goes down..

Okay, why just G&L's? Let me guess: You're comfortable with the sound, the feel and how they respond - who you EQ your rig, ect?

I *get* it completely. Funny - I'm a big believer that amps and cabs are completely different beasts - I use an Ashdown head and Epifani cabs (I really dislike Ashdown cabs and am not wild about Epi amps - - and I have tried both).

With the wealth of great basses out there today, it's hard to stick with just one style and make--but I do understand that many players feel that way (and like to be in their comfort zone). However, that being said, the custom builders today make superior products that are beyond just being eye candy, and if I could afford to, I'd buy one from all of them!

Later,
Bill

You may not see it live or in the media but I'm pretty sure a lot of famous players get new stuff sent to them for free all the time to tinker with, and if GAS strikes them, they are in a very good position to acquire something new, even though they stick with one thing for their sound, tone, etc.

I used to live down the street from funk/R&B keyboardist Arthur Neville. I used to hang out at his house and play with all the synthesizers that companies would send him. But most of the time when he played live he had an electric piano, and an organ.

really? Art Neville is super nice guy but I have no real yardstick of how well known he is. It always surprises me that anybody knows who he is. I guess in my own particualr musical scene the Hawkettes, Meters and Nevilles are mostly unknown. So I always preface stuff I say about him "I know this R&B keyboardist guy".
I knew his son Ian since he was a little baby. Knew Ian's mother Jenny as well. Used to be friends with his nephew Jaon, think he is a rapper now? Last I heard Art has had some back issues. I hope he is doing well, my mom still keeps in touch with those guys so I hear a bit every now and then.

Oh, he's nothing special-just New Orleans Musical Royalty and a member of one of the First Families of Rhythm and Blues and Funk. Lucky you!:)
He was in the Meters with Leo Nocentelli, George Porter, Jr. and Ziggy Modeliste. If any group of guys were The Real Deal, they were indeed!

I don't find it odd. What I find somewhat odd is people that have 4 or 5 of the same exact bass in their stable.

I am close. I own three basses, three of which are Ibanez ATKs. two of them are 16 years old, one being y main player, and the other being my custom one-of-a-kind piano black lineless fretless. the other ATK is from '07 and is a backup as well as set up with very low action for certain playing styles.

I LOVE the heavy body against mine, and have grown so accustomed to the neck profile that it feels so natural. the two fretted ones sound different enough and get played enought to warrant keeping them (I hate gear that sits) and the fretless has its own unique sound. so, a little crazy? maybe. passionate about something I find comfortable in feel and sound? yes.

Rickenbackers are my favorite basses - I own 3, with a 4th due to arrive tomorrow. As much as I love them, I also like a bit of variety as well, so I have 6 non-Rics. That said, I see nothing wrong with owning & playing just one brand of bass - whatever makes you happy.

1. Rickenbacker 4004Cii in MapleGlo
2. Rickenbacker 4004Cii in Translucent Blue
3. Rickenbacker 4003 in Jetglo
4. Rickenbacker 4001C64 in Fireglo
5. Spector Euro 4 LX in White
6. Ibanez ATK-700 in Blue Moon
7. Fender Geddy Lee Jazz Bass in Black
8. Neo Rock Bass illuminated in Blue & Green neon
9. Hamer import 12-string bass in Black
10. EBMM Stingray in Red Sparkle

Your situations not so crazy to me because you said they sound different. I do believe (based on IME), that no two basses of the same model play or sound exactly the same, but I've never really experienced any that sounded that different (yet) to warrant doing this.

I would actualy think it would be normal. While I was a working bassist I generaly only had 1 good bass and a cheap backup but like in the 80's I only had 1 bass, a Gibson Victory custom.I now own 8 basses .2 Westones, 1Tobias Growler, 1Ibanez BTB 1000E, 1 St.George Hollow Body, 1 Schecter Diamond Jazz, 1 Epiphone Thunderbird, and 1 ESP LTD B154DX. I am very happy with the basses I have and They give me all the tones that I could ever need.MTD basses are some of the best out there, imho, I love my Tobias Growler by Gibson. If I had to only have 1 bass it would probably be the Tobias.

Harry, I only own those tribbys because for the money, they were the least expensive super hot bass that I could afford. If I was not gigging I would only own one..However if i had enough money, I would own 2 wahl's or a couple of Zon's instead. G&L only has my business because of the tribbys price...they deffinatly have flaws...but they are close enough for guv work..
