There are exceptions. The major one being faster than light travel (FTL). Since human colonization of space is central to so much of SF, FTL has been given a lifetime pass.

how about Dr Who and his TARDIS?

The old sonic screwdriver is a bit of a stretch, about the only thing it doesn't do is make a cup of tea. Not very scientific.

A lot of sci-fi doesn't "violate the laws of physics." The Martian, Sunshine, Bladerunner...

Apparently the atmosphere on Mars isn't dense enough for winds to be damaging like they were in the movie. At most you feel a breeze. I think that's true. Could be wrong. It was a good movie regardless.
