Save up for the high line gear. In my experience the cheap stuff is always surprisingly good, and delivers about 90% of what the pro stuff does. All the magic is in that last 10% though.

Just buy something. You're not going to get settled on something until you've cycled through a few different rigs over a longer time horizon. You are at the start of the journey my friend, not the end.
In my experience, a lot of finer details and "finesse" in bass sound is virtually lost as soon as everyone in the band joins in. At least in most genres with live drums.
Getting the basics (loud, consistent, clear with as much bass extension and dynamics your music needs) in place is a must before there is any value in additional tweaking, IMHO and IME.
Many "processed" / modeled sounds that work well at lower SPL will be useless at gig volumes and vice versa.
I started using OD in my band a couple of years ago and it was a long-ish journey to find a solution that works. And I can assure you the gigging setting on my VT Bass sound strange-ish and far from impressive when soloed at living room levels...

if you cannot put a finger on what is wrong with your current system I suggest to wait until you can quantify the problem. To be honest, I have only seen one Line6 amp in use. I say "seen" because I could hardly hear the thing.
I've read good reviews on your GK cabinet so I don't think the problem lies there. I would say that you should go out and listen to every amp you can find within your price range and some that are out of it. It will give you a better sense of what you should end up with.

I have decided that I will restart the settings in the head and try to build my sound again. In the meantime I have started saving money and I made a list of what heads I will try when I get the money (most of them in the same range of price more or less). The Ashdown and the Orange I said in the first post plus a GK 700rb. Until I can afford that I will work on my line6
