I do not even have to do it outdoors but I will not do a job like this at home.
My free time is worth more to me than my auto mechanic charges.
Or I can go into work on my free time and make more than he charges for his labor and not put up with the frustration of working on a car.
I truly hate working on my vehicles, however, they run when I'm done and I know fasteners are tight and parts won't fall off on the freeway. Just watched a friend of mine fight an oil change place over a cracked pan. Watched my boss fight a dealership because they kept throwing parts at his pickup until it finally ran.
So, try it yourself if you have the time, experience and tools or take it to a shop with warranties and huge overhead to cover. Freedom of choice is a beautiful thing.
Yup.
I know what's going on with every piece of our vehicles.
My elderly parents nearly got stranded in West Texas and almost blew their van engine all because some dimwit at an oil change place didn't tighten the filter good enough. My 70+ year old Dad noticed it in time and had to finish this idiots work on the side of the road. :scowl:
Sorry, I just don't trust mechanics. If I paid one, I'd be in my driveway checking over all their work anyway so I may as well do it myself. I especially can't stand seeing them rip off women.
word is, CARB is looking to seal the hoods on cars in a few years to keep the indy shops out. We'll see.
Yes, there are a lot of hacks passing themselves off as mechanics.
But there are a lot of very competent mechanics out there.
I have been a machinist/mechanic for over 45 years. I have seen more stuff F'ed up by guys trying to fix it themselves at home than messed up by other mechanics.
Do you really think you know more than someone that spends his life doing something?
