Is it wrong to sticker your bass?

Okay -here's another chance for me to show how unhip I am! But I'm speaking straight from the heart and I'm not telling anyone to do anything I don't do myself.

NO! NO STICKERS!

Your mission is to play your instrument and keep it sounding and looking like it did when it was new. No stickers - no relicing.

Why?

My Epiphone T-bird I would say looks better than it did when new... despite no stickers or relic-ing. Also my 4001 originally was fireglo, but now is a deep blue sunburst, due to having been stripped and refinished. My 4003S is currently jetglo, but I plan on refinishing it to white. And lastly, my Peavey... is heavily modified, and covered in stickers. Looks nothing like it did new. Sounds better.

Keep in mind xXMoonichoXx , that most of the players here on the forum have instruments that cost upwards of at least $1000.00, placing a sticker that could damage the finish would be seen as unprofessional especially when attempting to sell or trade the bass . Also if you lurked these forums for awhile before joining you know that members like Gorn are longstanding and that he personally has had input on several threads, with an emphasis on respect to the instrument and the craft.

Don't take everything here (TalkBass) as the word of God, but understand that this is an amalgamation of knowledge passed from bass players before you.

My stickered bass is in its case in a cupboard awaiting a house move so you're getting my Xplorer instead. These stickers are around 15 years old, and showing no signs of peeling. Just make sure you clean the body of grease and polish before sticking - I use methylated spirited myself for this job.

I used to have blue automotive reflective tape around the edge of the body too, but it was super bright and annoyed people (including me) so I took it off.

If you put them on lighter coloured parts (particularly the pick guard) it will age and change colour over time - except where the stickers are placed - so you'll be left with permanent marks if you remove them later.
