When I was a kid we would always use nail polish remover. It works great also.

Non-acetone nail polish remover works/cleans safely on just about anything

Years ago I sold a black 4001 to a guy. Next time I saw the bass he had a dog chain wrapped around the headstock. Don't do that.

Also, "looking cool" is pretty much the only reason for basses to have anything but a clear coat on them. Or to have figured woods. Or pickguards that aren't just a piece of plastic in whatever color is cheapest. Or to have hardware any color beyond whatever color is cheapest and will protect from oxidation/wear.

I haven't read the other replies but here's my philosophy on basses:

1. Does it make noise?
2. Do you and your audience enjoy the noises being made?

If both of those things are true, nothing else really matters. The guy having a great time on a trashed Rogue with no D string is still ahead of the unhappy gear snob with 20k in boutique basses

Nail polish remover is not recommended , it will destroy a lacquer finish and most others. Goo gone or naphtha is a much better choice . Always test a inconspicuous spot before going to town.

Some guys here use really thick stickers, and like 'em so much they screw them to their bassess. There's a gang of them running around this place. For some reason they think their color of stickers are better than others. The gang calls their stickers "tort".

Keep in mind these guys who are telling you that stickers will ruin your finish and destroy the resale value probably spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars extra to get a bass that has been intentionally tarnished so it looks older than it really is

If it causes no harm to others, do whatever you want, unless you are a slave to the opinions of others, in which case do what they suggest. I suggest the former.
