Is music getting worse, or am I getting old?

But that's part of the issue - in the "good old days" (;)) you didn't need to look very hard.

Again...times have changed. Radio, records, and (later) CDs were literally the only way new music was heard. Bands were slaves to the industry - they only received attention by signing to major labels. You were nobody if you didn't have label support to buy you publicity.

Today, it is perfectly viable and accepted to self-release an album and make a living off of internet marketing. Nobody I know goes to the store to browse the CD section in search of new music. Nobody waits for radio stations to play new songs. The internet has allowed for the greatest volume of accessible music in history.

It's ridiculous to totally discredit all music made today by lumping all of it into Top 40, like some people constantly do. Music is progressing and changing together with the industry as a whole.

You really have to dig now to find good music. Radio has changed a lot since we were 15, it's much more focused on the pop. The internet is the real radio now, and you have access to a huge amount of music, most of it is terrible.

I don't seek out new music very often, because I already enjoy a lot of older stuff that has tremendous replay value with me.

First off, stop listening to the radio. Good music isn't on the radio anymore.

Second, you're getting old. HOWEVER, unlike a lot of people in your position, you seem to be unable to expand your horizons. As a musician, you should be able to appreciate talent, composition, and overall 'good' music regardless of the genre. Your problem seems to be your complete lack of ability (or perhaps lack of desire) to find contemporary sounds that appeal to you.

There are musicians today that are as talented, or in many cases, far more talented, than the artists you listed (Aerosmith.. really?). But the onus is on you to get off your complainey butt and find them.

I think because the record industry is dying out they're using all these crappy artist to try to save themselves and guess who buys most of those crappy artist albums. Young dumb impressionable kids. So all the good bands are really underground now. You really have to dig deep and dig around to find anything decent.

Powderfinger has some good tunes. There from Australia. There a little too poppy for my taste but I dig some of their stuff. Oddysey number five is a great record.

Lady Gaga is awesome, Katy Perry is hot and kinda awesome, Justin Beiber is the teenie-pop flavor of the week, Kesha is kinda awesome, Daughtry isn't anything special though the guy has a quite voice, and Justin Timberlake is awesome a producer and kinda awesome as an artist.

If you can't find current good music to listen to you're not looking hard enough.

I never thought I would find a "musician" on this forum who would make a comment like that.

Sad.

I'm sick of all this safe indie garbage. All these little rich kids playing epiphone casinos with some chick on keys. Talking about flowers. We need some heavy stuff like Black Sabbath or a band with some cajones. Or something like The Kinks.

I think the problem is where you are looking for the good music, ...... last weekend I found few new good bands (new for me): Aloe Blacc, Breakestra, Maroon 5....

Ah Breakestra. Seen them many times live and Miles is a monster on bass. Also, an incredibly nice guy. I think that he's on here as I asked him once.

Also, Beck, Porcupine Tree, Dredg, Black Keys, all still putting out music in the last few years that makes me jealous.

THANK YOU.. thats what I am sayin... Ive TRIED all the indie stuff... Band of Horses, Arcade Fire, Wilco, Ted Leo, The Black Keys, ... Ive listened to it all... and I think..it sucks.

Everything now sucks...

TV shows suck-- Someone how we'e gone from great American standards like Dallas and the Cosby Show to Survivor and Dancing with the Stars.

Movies- mainly a bunch of crappy remakes.. even the new movies that arent remakes are aimed at the lowest common denominator.

Late night tv... Leno and Letterman are still on... you know why? Because no one is GOOD enough to take their place.

I HATE MODERN LIFE!!!!!!!! I WANT MY DAMN CASSETTE PLAYER, MY VCR, MY KNOTS LANDING, MY PHONE I USED TO PLUG INTO MY CAR LIGHTER!!!!!

In the good old days we didn't have computers either :p. They've made searching for anything from music to fetish porn ridiculously easy. Looking for a band like Led Zepplin? Google, "Bands like Led Zepplin." I guess the harder thing is finding new stuff. I've found that iTunes is awesome for that. Go to the album of a bands you like a look in the "Listeners Also Bought" section. I'm sure services such Pandora and Grooveshark have similar features.

It helps not to looks for stuff similar to the music you already know and love because it opens you up to all new kinds of music that you never thought you'd like. If you were to ask the me of even two years ago if I thought I could like artists like Lady Gaga I would've looked at you like you were crazy. Now? I've got both of her CDs, lol. Poke around the net a bit and I'm sure you'll find some stuff.

There is a huge Doom Metal Scene growing if your into Sabbath. If your into The Kinks look up The Hives. I feel they can bring rock and roll back. Everything that band puts out is phenomenal. Whether it be their first punk album to their newe stuff, It's all good.

We remember the good stuff. If you look back at the Billboard charts from the 60s, 70s and 80s you'll find a whole bunch of crap... Just like today.

FWIW, I think this is one of the best times, ever, for music. So much variety, so much experimentation, and so many bands out there doing awesome stuff that are virtually unknown to the world. I hope it keeps up. I'm 34, btw... If that matters.

Dude some of the heaviest music is happening right now. You need to watch the movie Such Hawks Such Hounds and get out a little more. The radio DJ can't do all the work for you.

Hives= watered down, generic Kinks wanna-bes... the Hives dont have the charm, and songwriting capabilities of the madman Ray Davies... Ray Davies was an original.. sure the Hives can try to mimic their sound, but not even close to the real thing...
